Patricia Monteiro is a Research Group Leader at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), Portugal. She holds a BSc/MSc degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a PhD degree in Neuroscience. Dr. Monteiro did her Ph.D. training with Prof. Guoping Feng at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA), where she focused on understanding brain circuitry mechanisms underlying repetitive behaviors present in obsessive-compulsive (OCD) and autism-spectrum disorders (ASD). She published a study showing reversal of autistic-like behaviors in adult mice by restoring the Shank3 gene [Nature, 2016] and coauthored another publication showing that particular human mutations in the Shank3 gene can lead to distinct neuropsychiatric disorders [Neuron, 2016]. As an EMBO postdoctoral fellow, she worked with Prof. Nuno Sousa at ICVS University of Minho, studying the impact of chronic stress on brain circuits.  Dr. Monteiro has received numerous awards, namely the FEBS Excellence Award attributed by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) and a prestigious Branco Weiss fellowship. She is a SJC Member of the Portuguese National Academy of Sciences and an Advisory Board Member of EMBO Scientific Exchange Grants Program (the European Molecular Biology Organization). Dr. Monteiro's lab uses electrophysiological brain recordings together with novel neuroengineering tools to study neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.
