Hugo Matias received his BSc (1997), MSc (2002) and PhD (2007) degrees in Geophysics from the University of Lisbon. His master and PhD thesis were on seismic interpretation and evaluation of petroleum systems. He also holds a Post-Graduation in Oil and Gas Business (2002, UAL/IFP). He has +20 years’ experience in the O&G industry with focus in project and team management, portfolio evaluation, economic evaluation, basin analysis, salt tectonics, best practice application & multidisciplinary integration of main toolkits and software, Regional geology and Play Analysis, Geochemistry/petroleum systems modelling, Gravity and magnetics, Deepwater turbidites and carbonate reservoirs. Hugo started his career in 1997 with Partex Oil and Gas where he worked in projects in Kazakhstan and Middle East. He joined REPSOL in 2005 as senior geophysicist participating in a vast span of operated exploration projects in West Africa, Mediterranean and NW Europe which culminated with several oil discoveries in the offshore Spain. In 2010, he was appointed as New Ventures Europe Project Coordinator responsible for several important new acreage additions in the NW Europe, Black Sea, Offshore Portugal and Romania. From 2012 to 2015, he was promoted to Team Leader for Exploration and New Ventures Brazil responsible for all exploration assets and leading the bid round evaluations and directly involved in CO2 disposal projects in the offshore pre-salt carbonates. Subsequently, late 2015 till 2019 he was appointed Asset Manager for East Europe, Ireland and UK. From 2019 till 2020 he was promoted to SubSurface Manager, Karabashskiy Appraisal Project (Russia) as secondee on a joint venture between REPSOL and Gazprom. His role was to supervise geological/geophysical, reservoir engineering and production studies, including the evaluation of technical risks, resources and economic parameters, coordinate the planning and monitoring of operations with Geological Operations team. His main achievements include the completion ahead of time of the gas disposal and injection studies, optimization of well layout and co-supervision of research projects in digital petrophysics. In 2020 he returned to Portugal and joined CERENA (IST-University of Lisbon) as Principal Investigator and invited Professor developing research projects related with “green” exploration strategies and underground CO2 storage and was also appointed Coordinator of Post-Graduation in Circular Economy at Lusófona University. Since 2022 he has been CEO of NET4CO2, a technological organization dedicated to development and deployment of decarbonization technologies and solutions. As a member of the AAPG (since 1998) he served as Jury for the AAPG IBA competition Latin America (2014), Member of the Resolutions Committee (2012–2013), Delegate at the AAPG House of Delegates representing Portugal (2010–2013; 2006–2008), Chief Editor of the AAPG European Region Newsletter (2007–2010). In the last 5 years, he co-organized several international conferences and served as a member of several Scientific Committees (6 conferences), served as Scientific Reviewer in International Journals and is currently involved in the co-supervision of MSc and PhD thesis (4 students). He recurrently promotes outreach activities in academia/industry (8 oral seminars) and in media/press (4 interviews). He has extensive experience as course instructor (7 courses), researcher in international projects (11 projects), actively participated in international conferences (63 conference abstracts and posters) and published widely in international scientific journals (18 papers published).
