Ana Rita Ferreira is a Science and Technology Manager at iBiMED - Institute for Biomedicine, University of Aveiro (Portugal), and mantain research and teaching duties. Her scientific interests focus on host-pathogen interactions specifically in studying the role of microbiota in the antiviral response against respiratory viruses. She graduated in Biomedical Sciences in 2012 and concluded her MSc degree in Molecular Biomedicine in 2014. During this time, she was awarded with an Erasmus fellowship, which allowed to develop her work as a visiting student at the Institute of Virology (University of Marburg), under the supervision of Dr F. Weber. In 2015, she was awarded a PhD fellowship sponsored by FCT, to develop her PhD work at Daniela Ribeiro's lab (iBiMED-Institute of Biomedicine, University of Aveiro) and Jonathan Kagan's lab (Harvard Medical School/Boston Children's Hospital). In December 2018, she concluded her PhD degree in Biomedicine with an Honorable Mention. With her PhD work, she demonstrated that the hepatitis C virus and the human cytomegalovirus use distinct and specific mechanisms to neutralize the peroxisome-dependent antiviral signalling, but also demonstrated that different viruses take advantage of peroxisomal functions for virus particle formation and infection propagation. This work resulted in 4 first-author manuscripts. Since completion of her PhD, she has been involved in different scientific projects (PO biology, antiviral immunity, microbiology, cancer and genomics). She also works, as scientific consultant in a collaborative project with industry (Tech4MED, a company focused on developing medical solutions), which aims to find novel compounds that could be used to develop disinfectants with prolonged sterilization action. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was the SARS-CoV-2 Task Force Coordinator at the UAVR. During her career, she has worked at top leading institutions such as the Institute of Virology from the University of Marburg (Weber's lab), Harvard Medical School (Kagan's lab) and Gulbenkian Science Institute (Amorim's lab), where she interacted with experts in virology, immunology and obtained training in different advanced techniques. She has authored 13 scientific manuscripts in international peer reviewed journals, 8 of which as first-author, and 3 book chapters. She has presented her work as 10 oral communications (3 as invited speaker) and 16 poster communication in international and national meetings. Besides the previously mentioned fellowship, she has received 8 grants to present her work in international meetings and won 2 best oral communication prizes. She has been the co-supervisor of 3 MSc students and practical supervisor of several PhD, MSc and BSc students. She has been practical instructor in several MSc courses, and she currently teaches at the Virology course of the BSc in Biomedical Sciences at University of Aveiro. She has also been involved in several scientific outreach activities aimed to disseminate science to the public and children. Alongside with her scientific contribution, she has been a board member of different organizations and currently, and actively pursues her professional improvement by enrolling in mentoring programs.
