Fábio Fernandes is an Assistant Professor, a former Assistant Researcher (career), and has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He is a researcher at TEMA at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Aveiro. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2017 from the University of Aveiro: Biomechanical analysis of helmeted head impacts: novel materials and geometries. Until June of 2019, he had a postdoc position at UA, working in the product design and manufacturing of novel products for the lighting industry. Since June of 2019 until June of 2021, he was Junior Researcher under FTC grant CEECIND/01192/2017 (GREENSIDE - Green and advanced manufacturing, simulation and design to improve safety devices), a grant awarded in the highly competitive CEEC 2017 (Ranked 2nd in the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Systems). He has expertise in numerical modelling, biomechanics, impact engineering, cork composites, materials characterisation, Computer-aided Design/Engineering (CAD/CAE), finite element (FE) simulations of real-world nonlinear problems and constitutive validation, from crashworthiness to injury biomechanics. Additionally, he has also been actively involved in innovative challenges of technological processes such as laser welding, marking and processing of several materials, and the optimisation of the anodisation process. Since 2013, he has been an active author with more than 70 publications indexed in SCOPUS, in JCR SCI journals, including 4 papers in Materials and Design (IF = 7.991). He also published a book entitled Head Injury Simulation in Road Traffic Accidents. He has >1000 citations and an h-index of 19 (Scopus). Since 2018 he has supervised 46 MSc, 4 PhD students, 2 Postdocs and 3 junior researcher. Fábio Fernandes participated in 23 R&D projects (9 in cooperation with industry), and 2 internationals, being the local PI of 1 European project (ERASMUS+) and 1 national project (FCT PeX 2022). His work on helmet testing and evaluation with advanced numerical tools was selected as the cover image of Mathematical and Computational Applications, volume 25, March 2020. He has been invited to organise special issues, give invited talks, and participate as a jury member in international scientific competitions. His work has been recognised with prestigious awards and honours, e.g. the 2017 Mário Quartin Graça Scientific award by his PhD work, and more recently, the invention Flattie resulted in the 8th edition of BfK Ideas, BikeUp, and the James Dyson (national) awards, and iF Product Design Award. He also has registered inventions in the form of a patent (PL426323A1, Multi-sensor headband), which was awarded in the IX national competition (PL) for inventors and patents. Another invention regarding laser joining of polymers is currently pending by EPO. He received the Materials 2020 Outstanding Reviewer Award by the Materials Editorial Office (IF=3.057) in January 2021. His work has been highlighted several times in National TVs (RTP1, SIC, SIC Notícias, SIC Internacional; Porto Canal), radio (Antena 1) and several newspapers/magazines (Jornal de Negócios, Público, Revista Exame Informática, Jornal de Notícias, Expresso). He is a member of the Editorial Board of Mathematical and Computational Applications and a topic editor in Materials, Processes, and Nanomanufacturing journals.
