My PhD was in the field of medicinal chemistry and was focused on design and synthesis of biologically active small molecules. During my formation as medicinal chemist I became an expert in the methods of organic synthesis and medicinal and analytical chemistry, as well as in supramolecular chemistry. My interest in supramolecular chemistry started with my BSc thesis which describes preparation of small amino acid based gelators and their self-assembly into three-dimensional structures. I also gained insight into molecular biology approaches related to the research of drug activity mechanisms. During my work in the field of medicinal chemistry I developed a strong interest into interdisciplinary approach to drug development and moved to a new research center which eventually led to completely new area of research (biochemistry). There I became interested in metabolism and especially in the use of NMR and stable labelled isotopomeres in the elucidation of metabolic pathway fluxes (dietary manipulation in aquamarine industry, influence of dietary fructose on lipogenesis, metabolic engineering in cancer cell metabolism and tumor growth). Recently, I became interested in the implementation of analytical platforms (NMR, mass spectroscopy) and multivariate statistical methods in metabolomics which I applied to toxicological studies of silver nanoparticles in cell (influence of NP size and coating) and animal models (organ response to NP). In the past two years I focused my research interest on male reproduction, especially the influence of obesity on male fertility, particularly the influence of obesity on male fertility. The knowledge acquired in metabolism, analytical techniques (NMR, chromatography-MS) as well as in methods of molecular biology were successfully applied in the fields of male fertility, obesity and toxicology in both cellular and animal models, and resulted in relevant publications in the fields nanotechnology and male fertility. Since 2019 I am a Contracted Researcher at the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Pharmacy. The association with the project Novel therapeutic strategy for osteosarcoma combining polyplexes and polymeric micelles to monitor the biological effects opened new oportunities to expend my knowledge and experience in nanotechnology and its application in disease therapies. Since then, I have published several papers in the field of nanosystems in disease therapy, primarily cancer. I have also gained funding and am currently a co-PI on the project funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Multifunctional cell membrane-camouflaged polymeric micelles for combination therapy of colorectal cancer)
