Mario Del Rosario is currently a postdoc working in Prof Henriques lab, leading a highly productive scientifical career (2 review, 1 book chapter and 3 research paper from the type he started) including a first author and a last corresponding author publications. Additionally, he is also supervising the project of a PhD student. Mario's current postdoc at the ITQB focuses on understanding phototoxicity using state-of-the-art computational approaches mixed with biology. Mario Del Rosario trained as a molecular parasitologist completing a PhD in Infection and Immunobiology at the University of Glasgow (UK) in 2019 using Toxoplasma gondii as a study model. Prior to that, Mario also completed a Master in Research (MRes) in Biomedical Sciences (Merit) in 2014 at the University of Glasgow (UK) and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biology in 2012 at the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (Ecuador). Throughout his scientific career, he published 6 research articles in high-impact journals with a cumulative impact factor of 38.778 and 1 book chapter as an imaging expert on Toxoplasma gondii. Additionally, he presented his work at International conferences as posters (Focus on Microscopy in 2022, Actin UK in 2018, Molecular Parasitology Meeting in 2018 and BioMalPar XIII in 2017) and oral presentations (Microscopy at the Frontiers of Science in 2021 as an invited speaker, Wellcome Trust ISAB in 2019 and BioMalPar XIV in 2018). During Mario's career, he has managed to secure research funds (~330,000 $USD) via competitive individual scholarships for his international studies (SENESCYT Universidades de Excelencia 2013 - 2019). Additionally, during his PhD, Mario actively participated in science outreach programs, becoming a member of STEM Ambassador Scotland, where he interacted with people of all ages and backgrounds, promoting research and teaching basic science notions. This is also extended online, where he actively promotes science, equality, and open access throughout talks in his native country Ecuador, where he performs science communication to the public in Spanish and English. Mario has worked as a teacher assistant in both Ecuador and the UK, after his PhD has participated as a guest lecturer through several universities in Ecuador and is currently a member of a scientific editorial committee in the Mediciencias magazine (Ecuador). He is also heading the organisation of an international workshop in Ecuador with the aim to democratise microscopy in South America with the funding of the Company of Biologist. Having research experience across multiple countries has served him to maintain a wide network of international collaborators (Jake Baum, Imperial College London, UK; Isabelle Tardieux, University of Grenoble, France; Robert Insall, Beatson Cancer Research Institute, UK; Freddy Frischknecht, University of Heidelberg, Germany; Sebastian Lourido, MIT, USA; Washington Cárdenas, Universidad Politécnica del Litoral, Ecuador; Fernanda La-Torre, Universidad Técnica de Ambato, Ecuador) that extends his reach beyond Europe. The combination of these experiences further empowers him as a researcher on a path to becoming independent by using multidisciplinary approaches to solve outstanding open questions in biology.
