Carlos Jorge Sousa de São José (Citation name: Carlos São-José) concluded his PhD in Biology (Molecular Biology) in 2002, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCULisboa). He conducted post-doctoral studies on phage molecular biology between 2002-2008 at the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (FCULisboa) and Laboratoire de Virologie Moléculaire et Structurale, CNRS-Gif-sur-Yvette, France. During 2008-2010 he was Principal Investigator in the field of molecular microbiology (FCT Program “Ciência2007”) at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, in accumulation with the role of Business Unit Scientific Manager of the R&D bacteriophage program of the biotech company Technophage, SA. Since 2010, C. São-José is Professor of Microbiology at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (FFULisboa), where he teaches different subjects in the areas of infectious diseases and molecular microbiology. Until 2014, he headed the Phage and Bacteria Molecular Biology Group at the Center of Molecular Pathogenesis - Unit of Retroviruses and Associated infections (FFULisboa). The group became later part of the Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology group at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa, FFULisboa). With the reorganization of iMed.ULisboa in 2021, C. São-José started leading a new lab, the PhaBRIC lab - Phage Biology Research and Infection Control. The PhaBRIC lab studies molecular process underlying phage/bacterial cell interactions, both with fundamental and application-oriented purposes. In the last years, the principal research areas have been focused on: (I) understanding the structure, mode of action and regulation of the lytic proteins that phages use to destroy the bacterial cell envelope. C. São-José research revealed unexpected structural features of phage endolysins and uncovered protein and bacterial determinants controlling the bacteriolytic action of phage lytic enzymes, thus providing major insights for their exploration as antibacterials (enzybiotics) against drug-resistant, pathogenic bacteria; (II) exploration and design of phage-based products for biomedical and biotechnological applications. Part of this research has been developed in collaboration with company Technophage, SA., and includes the development of phage-derived products for the combat of nosocomial infection caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. C. São-José published over 35 peer-reviewed research articles (more than 1600 citations, H-index of 22), 5 book chapters and co-authored 4 patents. C. São-José has played a key role in 12 competitively funded projects (4 as PI, 8 as a team member), having supervised 3 PhD thesis (1 ongoing), 5 Master thesis (other 2 as co-supervisor) and several research projects of post-doc, graduate, and undergraduate students. C. São-José was a member of the organizing committee for the 6th Viruses of Microbes International Meeting (VoM2022) and of season 1 of iVoM webinar series. C. São-José has contributed to several science evaluation activities, including over 50 peer reviews, over 40 PhD / Master theses, over 100 abstracts submitted to conferences (VoM2022, ECCMID2024, ESCMID Global 2025), and project grants submitted to funding agencies such as National Science Centre (Poland), Israel Science Foundation, and Research Foundation – Flanders (Belgium). C. São-José plays a role in scientific publishing as editorial board member of Microorganisms (Section: Molecular Microbiology and Immunology), as Guest Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology (Section: Virology), and as Review Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology (Antimicrobials, Resistance, and Chemotherapy) and Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences (Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics).
