I am Marija Prodana, currently an assistant researcher at Department of Biology and Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, University of Aveiro, Portugal. I hold Bachelor with Honours in Biology (Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, Serbia), MSc in Environmental Studies -JEMES (Aalborg University, Denmark; Hamburg University of Technology, Germany; University of Aveiro, Portugal; two-year MSc grant awarded by European Commission), and since July 2018, a PhD in Biology with Specialization in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Biology (Department of Biology, UA; grant awarded by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology-FCT). Prior to my postgraduate studies, I gained a valuable working experience in the laboratory for safety assessment of food and consumer products Eko-lab d.o.o. Novi Sad (2008/2009). Up to date I published 14 ISI papers (WOS=535 citations, h-index 6, and Google scholar=854 citations, h-index 8), one book chapter, delivered six oral presentations at national and international level, with more than 35 communications (platform, posters, conference papers) predominantly in international conferences. My research is focused on: soil quality, soil functions and ecosystem services, terrestrial ecotoxicology, soil-biota interactions in biochar- and compost-amended soil, carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling in amended soils (biochar, compost, composites, insect frass), soil microbial responses, leaching of contaminants and nutrients from soil and impact on aquatic ecosystems, fate and behaviour of nano-chemicals in soils, bioaccumulation of nano-pesticides in soil invertebrates, bioplastic fate and behaviour in soil and interaction with soil biota, biodegradation of bioplastics, bioaccumulation of contaminants in insects for food and feed, risk assessment of chemicals, and environmental risk assessment. At present, I am primarily focused on studying toxicity and bioaccumulation of various contaminant groups (metals, PAHs, mycotoxins) in insects used for feed and food, within the ENTOSAFE project. Outreach activities and dissemination of knowledge have significant role in my professional engagement, like those on increasing public awareness on the role of soil in human and environmental health and promoting soil literacy. My day-to-day work involves laboratory training of undergraduate and graduate students.

The training course consisted of both theoretical and practical lectures: production and application of bio- and hydrochar, modern analytical tools such as spectroscopic (NMR, IR, Relaxometry), microscopic techniques (TEM, NMR-micro imaging), as well as to ecotoxicological approaches. Additionally, each participant presented his/hers ongoing research.

The direct outcome of these meetings was an opinion paper on the state of knowledge on the biochar applications to soil (please see Tammeorg et al., 2017).
