Pedro M. R. Paulo graduated in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Tecnico (Lisbon, Portugal) in 2000 with an overall score of 18 out of 20, which earned him a Prize for the Best Graduating Student. He completed his PhD degree in Chemistry from Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa in 2005, under the supervision of Prof. Sílvia Costa. From his PhD studies, he is corresponding author of 5 out of 8 articles, demonstrating that he achieved scientific independence at an earlier stage in his career. PMRP was Post-Doctoral researcher between 2006-2008. He spent one year in the group of Prof. Michel Orrit (Leiden University, The Netherlands), where he received training in single-molecule optics. In 2009, he won a Research Fellow position at Centro de Química Estrutural on Nano- and Supramolecular Chemistry. PMRP has implemented a new research line at the host laboratory on Single-Molecule Fluorescence and related techniques, and is now responsible for the confocal fluorescence lifetime microscope of the Spectroscopy facility at CQE. Since 2023, he is Principal Investigator under the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus - 5th Edition. He has been developing research on nanobiosensors with plasmon-enhanced fluorescence signaling, and he has participated in the development of plasmonic nanoantennas that show impressive emission enhancements of single dyes by 3 up to 6 orders of magnitude. Overall, he has published 40 papers in international peer review journals; he is corresponding author in 19 out of his 40 articles. About 45 % of his articles (18 out of 40) are published in Q1 journals from the fields of Physical Chemistry, or Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, or Materials Science or Chemistry, multidisciplinary. The total number of citations accumulated is 1506 citations (without self-citations), which gives an average number of 37.7 citations per paper. He co-authored several articles published in high impact factor journals, Nature Nanotechnology (IF 38.3), Angewandte Chemie - International Edition (IF 16.6), ACS Nano (IF 17.1), The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters (IF 5.6) and Nanoscale (IF 6.7). One article is highly cited paper Web of Knowledge. PMRP has been teaching Physical-Chemistry (lab classes) at Instituto Superior Técnico. In 2016, 2021 and 2022, he was awarded a Diploma for Excellence in Teaching. He has been supervising (or co-supervising) Master students (8 concluded & 3 ongoing), PhD students (4 concluded & 2 ongoing) and Post-doc researchers (5 concluded). He has also supervised students in courses from Doctoral Programs (6 concluded & 4 ongoing). Between 2013 and 2015, he was Principal Investigator of a project funded by FCT on Functionalized Metal Nano-Gaps for Single Protein Biosensing. Overall, he has participated in 6 projects as team member. Currently, he is Principal Investigator of a project funded by FCT on Gold Nanosensors for Single-Molecule Detection of RNA Biomarkers - NanoSensRNA. He is regularly invited to peer review articles in international journals, and to participate in Master and PhD juries. He has been invited for orals at national (4x) and international conferences (4x).
