Susana Araújo Marreiro Varela. I am currently a PhD Researcher at the William James Center for Research (WJCR) of ISPA-Instituto Universitário (ISPA-IU) and at the Integrative Behavioural Biology Group (IBBG) of the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM). I graduated in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), Portugal, in 2001. In 2002 and 2007, I completed my MSc and PhD degrees in Behavioural and Evolutionary Biology at the Sorbonne Université Campus Pierre et Marie Curie, in France. I returned to Portugal in December 2007. Between 2008 and 2009, I worked on the translation to Portuguese of the book “The Descent of Man and The Selection in Relation to Sex”, by Charles Darwin (2nd edition, 1874). My translation was later awarded an Honourable Mention at the 2010 Latin Union and FCT Translation Award. I started my first post-doc in September 2010, at FCUL, in the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c). At FCUL, I also worked as Monitor of practical classes (2009-2013) and, later, as Invited Assistant Professor (2013-2017), teaching Animal Behaviour to undergraduate students. In May 2017, I started my second post-doctoral position at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), and since March 2022 my current PhD Researcher position at the William James Center for Research (WJCR) of ISPA-IU. Since 2016, at ISPA-IU, I have also been working as Lecturer, teaching Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology, Neuroethology, Social Neuroscience, and Genes Brain & Behaviour to MSc students. Since obtaining my PhD degree, I have published 29 papers in international peer-reviewed journals with an accumulated IF of 99.1 and with 497 citations in Scopus until July 2024, achieving an h-index of 11. Of those papers, 4 were published as the first author, 11 as the second author and 9 as the last author. Of all these, 24 were published in Q1, 4 in Q2 and 1 in Q3 journals in the fields of Biology, Behaviour, Ecology, Evolution and Neurobiology. So far, I have (co)supervised 6 PhD students (2 ongoing), 8 MSc students (1 ongoing) and have provided tutorship for 25 graduate and undergraduate students (or groups of students) in different types of research internships. I also provided guidance and support to the Animal Behaviour projects of over 700 undergraduate students during my teaching years at FCUL. Concerning scholarships and funding, I was awarded 1 doctoral and 2 post-doctoral grants, 2 research contracts and 3 project grants as the Responsible Investigator (1 ongoing), 2 from the Portuguese funding agency (FCT) and 1 from the British Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB). I have also participated as a PhD Researcher in 3 other projects funded by FCT (1 ongoing). I am Associate Editor of the journal Acta Ethologica with 19 editor records, and occasional reviewer for more than 20 scientific journals. I participated in more than 100 meetings, of which 5 and 10 were international and national invited talks, respectively, and among the presentations of my students, 3 received awards for best poster and 2 for best oral presentations. Additionally, I participated in the organization or scientific committees of at least 15 national meetings. Until recently, I was a board member of the Portuguese scientific societies for Evolutionary Biology and Ethology. I currently participate in the activities of these societies mainly as a member of the scientific committees of their annual congresses. Within the activities of these societies but not only, I have also organized and/or participated in at least 15 events of science communication and outreach.
