Contracted Senior Research Chemist in University of Lisbon (CQE) and Invited Assistant Professor in University of Lisbon, Instituto Superior Técnico. Karina Shimizu (KS) graduated in Chemistry in 1998 at Institute of Chemistry, University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, completed his MSc degree in 2001 (quantum chemical calculations of the solvation of reactants, reaction intermediates, activated complex and products in hydrolysis of carbonyl compounds) and his PhD degree in Physical Chemistry in 2005 (calculation of solvation free energies with the electronegativity equalization method, GBEEM-ELR), both at USP. Works in the area of Chemical Sciences, with emphasis in Physical Chemistry. KS has collaborations with groups from Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Austria, UK, USA, Canada, Brazil, China, Japan and Australia. KS has large experience in the development of implicit solvation models, atomic charge models, genetic algorithm and transition state calculations. Also, KS develops software for molecular dynamics trajectory analysis, calculation of structural, energetic and dynamic properties. KS has more than 25 years of experience in DFT, ab initio and semi-empirical computational methods (Gaussian, ORCA, DALTON, AMSOL and Spartan packages), contributing on theoretical pKa calculations, reparameterization of the PCM solvation model, evaluation of electronic transitions and development of force fields for classical molecular dynamics simulations. Since 2007 KS has been actively working on Molecular Dynamics simulations of many chemical and thermophysical aspects of pure Ionic Liquids (IL) and other condensed phases, IL in mixtures, IL in solutions, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid interfaces. Her research interests are the structure and properties of ILs and other concentrated solutions.
