Daniela Vilasboas-Campos started working in research in 2016 during her master's thesis entitled: “Evaluation of neuroprotective effects of medicinal plant extracts” at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) at the Neurosciences Research Domain under supervision of prof. Patrícia Maciel. In 2018, she joined the project entitled: “Whole-exome sequencing of discordant and concordant affected sib pairs in spinocerebellar ataxia 3 (SCA3): a tool to identify novel modifier genes and highlight disrupted molecular pathways”. Her participation in this project was focused on the functional evaluation of genes identified in Machado-Joseph disease patients in C. elegans model of MJD. At the beginning of 2019, Daniela joined the project titled: “Study of the therapeutic effect of autophagy modulating compounds in a C. elegans model of Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3/Machado-Joseph disease”, a collaboration with the company Casma Therapeutics, Inc (USA) and BNML - BEHAVIORAL e MOLECULAR LAB LDA (Portugal). In 2019, Daniela won an individual fellowships financed by the FCT (SFRH/BD/147826/2019), with the project entitled: “Chemogenomics screening for novel therapeutic target identification in a C. elegans model of Machado-Joseph disease”, under supervision of prof. Patrícia Maciel and Dr. Andreia Teixeira-Castro.
