Manuel Prieto (PhD, 1981, Habilitation, 1993) is Full Professor of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), and Past-President of IUPAB (http://iupab.org/)(2024-2027). The work (February 2024) (ISI Web of Science: 264 publications , and 15 book chapters, 7242 citations; Google Scholar: 294 publications, 10144 citations ) obtained international recognition, in the area of advanced photophysical methodologies in life sciences, and object of invited communications, including a significant number of plenary talks. His work is centered in Molecular and Cell Biophysics, namely on the application of state-of-the art fluorescence methodologies, both in ensemble average and under the microscope, allowing to retrieve topological and dynamic information on biological systems, using quantitative approaches. Examples of the broad research interests, are membrane biophysics such as phase diagrams, detection and study of membrane nanodomains, lipid-protein/peptide and lipid-DNA interaction, amyloid fiber formation, and ion channels. At IST he has been involved in the teaching of Structural Biology, General Chemistry, and Spectroscopy, receiving the award of Excellent Teacher (2012, 2013). Of his previous PhD students (28 supervised/co-supervised), a significant number went into high profile careers such as Full Profs. (Univ. Lisboa), Assoc. Profs. (Univ. Coimbra, Porto, Lisboa and Madeira), Assistant Profs. (Univ. Lisboa and Coimbra), Assistant Res. (Univ. Lisboa, Nova), scientific edition (As. Editor, Nature; Senior Editor, Spandidos Pub.) and industry. MP is at the origin of the Portuguese biophysics school, is the founder of the Portuguese Biophysical Society, and has been deeply involved in Schools of Biophysics in Europe, Latin-America and Asia, both as organizer and lecturer, and is International Mentor of the Biophysical Society (USA). MP has a strong involvement in science outreach activities both in Portugal (secondary school presentations to >6000 students, Chemistry Olympiad, European Researchers Night), and abroad (Brazil, Uruguay). MP was the PI or co-PI of a large number of projects, both national (FCT), transnational (Brazil, Canada, Spain), and European (Marie-Curie, COST, EUREKA), and has also been actively involved in the organization of many international congresses. He is member of the Editorial Board of Biochim. Biophys. Acta and Chem. Phys. Lipids (Elsevier), Biophys. Rev. (Springer), Int. J. Mol. Sciences (MDPI), Membranes (MDPI), and Associate Editor of Membrane Physiology and Biophysics (Frontiers). MP has a regular participation as evaluator of international agencies e.g., NSF (USA), EPSRS (UK), ANR (France), NOSR (Netherlands), CNF (Czech Republic), CSIR (India). At the European level, he has been evaluator for Marie-Curie and COST actions. Also participated abroad in committees for academic positions, and Habilitation and PhD thesis. At the national level, he was member of the Scientific Council for Exact Sciences and Engineering (FCT, Portugal). MP has a strong record of participation in international scientific organizations: i) Council of LAFeBS (Latin American Fed. of Biophys. Societies), ii) Science Europe- Sci. Committee, iii) FEBS Publications Committee (2009-2013), iv) Collaborator Initiative for Science in Europe (2013). Also, he was Faculty Member of the UNESCO Chair of Biophysics (Argentina, 1999-2003), President of EBSA (European Biophysical Societies' Association), and is President of the major Biophysics organization, IUPAB (International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics). He is also Emeritus Member of BPS. MP received the awards: 2005- Estímulo à Excelência - FCT (Portugal); 2006- Prémio União Latina, UTL (Portugal); 2007- Prémio Científico UTL/ Santander Totta- Biophysics Hon. Mention; 2008- Prémio Científico UTL/ Santander Totta- Biophysics; 2011- Honorary Member of the Spanish Biophysical Society; 2013-Distinguished Visitor-Univ.de Córdoba, Argentina.
