Márcia T. Rodrigues graduated in Applied Biology and accomplished her Ph.D. in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and Stem Cells under the supervision of Prof. Rui L. Reis by the University of Minho in 2011 focusing on bone and osteochondral tissue engineering using stem cells, supportive biomaterials, and advanced bioreactor systems. A significant part of her Ph.D. work, focusing on the use of amniotic fluid stem cells, was developed at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM, USA), a world-recognized Institute in the field, under the supervision of Profs A. Atala and James J. Yoo. After her Ph.D., she has been a key player in the implementation and consolidation of new research lines at the 3B¿s on tissue engineering for tendon and ligament, and on magnetic nanotechnologies led by Prof. Manuela Gomes. She has explored different aspects of tendon biology, including (stem) cell subsets more prone to tenogenic commitment, mechano-magnetic stimulation for tenogenic differentiation, and scaffolding design to recapitulate the architecture of tendons. The theranostic potential of magnetic nanotechnologies to remotely instruct cells and to modulate inflammation served as a starting point for her current research on the modulation of inflammatory events. She is particularly interested in immune-engineering platforms and reprogramming tools for fine-tuned guidance of cells aiming at precision and personalized therapies. The exploitation of immunomodulation mechanisms targeting inflammatory cues holds the translational potential to improve the integration and lifespan of tissue substitutes and artificial devices and to assist advanced therapies for chronic inflammation-associated pathologies affecting numerous tissues and organs. MT Rodrigues has integrated competitive funded national and international projects (EC, NIH, ERC, FCT, LaCaixa), including an ERC CoG grant, being responsible for research and management tasks as well as for educational and dissemination activities. In 2016, she was awarded an Institutional project funded by the Associate Laboratory ICVS/3Bs to explore a magnetic particulate system for the treatment of Tuberculosis. In 2018 she has been officially invited to be an EC external evaluator. She has also been part of the scientific committee and organization of international scientific events and acts as a peer reviewer in several major international journals in the field. She has been lecturing in MSc and Ph.D. programs and is an invited lecturer in symposia and advanced classes of MSc degrees and Doctoral Programs (UMinho and MIT/Portugal), and is a coordinator member of a post-graduation e-learning course on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. She has co-supervised research trainees, BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. students with backgrounds in genetics, biotechnology, and biomedical/biological engineering with national and international established collaborations. Currently, she co-supervises 2 Ph.D. students and mentors 2 post-doctoral fellows. Presently, Márcia T. Rodrigues edited one scientific book on Tendon Regeneration (Elsevier). She also authors 13 book chapters, 1 chapter for a TERM Encyclopedia, 45 papers in international refereed journals, 2 featured articles and 2 corresponding author papers (plus 3 submitted), 3 invited lectures in international conferences and in 14 advanced courses, and >80 communications with abstracts in proceedings and/or peer-reviewed journals. She was invited to publish a scientific cover for the TE journal. She has been cited > 1570 times and an h-index of 22 (ISI WoS).
