Rui Domingues graduated in Industrial Chemistry and Management (2006), obtained a MSc in Materials Derived from Renewable Resources (2008) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (2012) at University of Aveiro, Portugal, under the supervision of Prof. Carlos Pascoal Neto and Carlos Silva. His PhD focused on applying biorefinery concepts and supercritical fluid technologies for the extraction/purification of bioactive molecules from industrial byproducts, resulting in the publication of 11 journal articles (7 as first author) and 1 granted patent. He joined 3Bs Research Group, University of Minho (UM), as Postdoc in 2013 (supported by a Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) Grant during 3 years), institution where he recently became Assistant Researcher (2019). During this period, he has been a visiting researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, USA, at Prof. Peppas Lab in 2016, and in 2017 he became Invited Assistant Professor at University of Minho. At 3Bs, he had a significant contribution for the proposals of several EU and national funded projects (e.g. Recognize, ChimericFibre4Tendon, ERC-MagTendon) in which he has been working as a core team member, and is currently PI of 2 ongoing projects (SmarTendon, Nanoplant). His main research topics are focused on the development of functional biomaterials for TERM applications, particularly exploring different nanoparticles (cellulose nanocrystals, magnetic nanoparticles) to produce nanostructured biomaterials (nanofibrous scaffolds, hydrogels) for tendon TE. His current research interests include the development of molecularly imprinted strategies to produce intelligent biomaterial scaffolds, a filed in which he was awarded in 2020 with the highly competitive Individual Support from FCT Stimulus of Scientific Employment (CEEC). As result of his research at 3Bs, he has authored 35 journal articles (plus 2 under review and 3 in preparation), filled 3 patent applications, published 6 book chapters (1 in press), presented several oral communications in prestigious international conferences, several as an invited speaker like for example at the Frist Congress of Elbow and Shoulder, Portuguese Society of the Shoulder and Elbow, in 2019 or TERMIS-EU (was to be held in 2020). He published a total of 46 journal articles (37 in Q1 rank, 12 as corresponding author), including papers in high impact factor journals in the field (Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, Small, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, Advanced Healthcare Materials, ACS Applied Materials and interfaces, Nanoscale, Acta Biomaterialia, Chemical Communications, Biomacromolecules...), 6 book chapters and 4 patents, he has an h-index of 22 and received ~1800 citations (Google Scholar database). At UM, Rui Domingues has concluded the supervision of 5 MSc and 1 PhD students under national and international joint programs with University of Lisbon, University of Sidney, Australia (collaboration with prof. Antony Wiess) , and University of Trento, Italy (collaboration with prof. Antonella Motta) and University of Pennsylvania (Colaboration with prof. Jason Burdick) as partners, and currently supervises 1 MSc, 2 PhD students, and mentors 1 PostDoc researcher with distinct backgrounds in topic that include molecularly imprinted nanoparticle synthesis (collaboration with prof. Nicholas Peppas, UT Austin, USA), nanocomposite nanofibers, hydrogels bioinks for 3D biofabrication and organ-on-chip strategies directed to tendon TE applications.
