In 2008 I completed my PhD in Materials Science and Technology-Biomaterials from the Univ. of Minho, under the supervision of Prof. T. Kokubo (Univ. of Kyoto, Japan) and Prof. R. Reis (Univ. of Minho), developing new approaches for designing bioactive materials for bone repair. During my Master's in Polymer Engineering, I earn my passion for microscopy analysis. I had the opportunity to work with Prof. Atsuo Ito in Japan by studying the formation of a calcium phosphate layer on osteoconductive materials by using in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). In my postdoctoral studies, I investigated the influence of silanol groups on the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. Later, I initiated research in chimeric silk proteins with different functionalities, cell adhesion, apatite nucleation, and antibacterial motifs, for their application in tissue engineering and infection control of implants. Multi-scale imaging and analysis methods are crucial to boosting material and life sciences. In the last five years, my focus has been on microscopy and technology development for my research. Under this role, I gained experience with image processing/analysis processing and standard software for electron microscopy and AFM. As a result of the experience acquired, I became head of the microscopy facilities of 3B’s Research Group, provided advanced imaging/analysis tools, and fostered collaborations between the group, universities, and industry. Currently, I am focusing on combining different imaging tools (FIB-SEM, CLEM, AFM) into a unique platform, and in this way, providing new prospects to gain insights on the surface and structural organization of cells, tissue, and their interaction with materials.
