Artur Filipe Rodrigues holds a PhD in Nanoscience (specialisation in Pharmacy) from the University of Manchester (UK) and an MSc in Molecular Biotechnology from the University of Aveiro (Portugal). He has 10+ years of experience in Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, focusing on the development of nanomaterials for advanced drug delivery systems and biointerfaces. Filipe joined the Centre for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CiBB) of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in 2019, where he has developed nanoformulations for the delivery of biologics (enzymes, mRNA) for gene editing in the brain and skin. He later secured a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Widening Fellowship (2020-2022, EUR 160k) to formulate graphene-based nanocomposites for wireless electrical stimulation of neural cells using light. Passionate about bringing therapeutic innovation to patients, Filipe served digital health start-up iLoF (Portugal/UK) as Biochemistry Lead, leveraging his technical skills to explore strategic opportunities and partnerships in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. He returned to CiBB in 2023 to support therapeutic innovation in Regenerative Medicine. Filipe aspires to become a leader in the development of advanced therapies and to bring novel treatments to improve patients' welfare. Throughout his career, he acquired extensive experience in the generation of preclinical evidence on the pharmacology and toxicology of nanoscale systems, which led to the first-in-human clinical trial involving controlled exposure to graphene by inhalation (NCT03659864, DOI: 10.1038/s41565-023-01572-3). In addition, Filipe discovered a polymeric nanoformulation that selectively delivers mRNA to fibroblasts, resulting in a patent application (WO2023037311). This technology has helped CiBB attracting EUR 1.5M in European funding through EIC Pathfinder Open projects Piezo4Spine and REGENERAR, in addition to 2 innovation awards. Filipe has been engaged with innovation and knowledge dissemination through the supervision of 2 MSc theses and 4 laboratory rotations, as well as the organisation of 3 scientific events and active participation in numerous public engagement events. His research findings have been presented at 12 international conferences, where he won 2 awards. Overall, Filipe has interacted with 100+ authors (15+ nationalities), publishing a total of 22 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (13 in the last 5 years) and 1 book chapter, which have accumulated 970+ citations (h-index = 16). His efforts in the scientific community were recognised with his nominations in 2023 as an Emerging Investigator and as an Outstanding Reviewer for RSC journals Nanoscale and Biomaterials Science, respectively.
