Sandra Pinto graduated in biochemistry from the University of Beira Interior in 2006. During her last year as an undergraduate student she worked at Hospital Cova da Beira where she acquired experience in clinical microbiology. In 2009 she engaged in a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Lisbon and completed it in 2013. A significant portion (regular visits from 2009-2011) of her PhD was carried out at the Weizmann Institute of Science. During her PhD, she acquired strong multidisciplinary training on chemistry, state-of-the-art biophysics methodologies (e.g. Fluorescence Spectroscopy and microscopy) and cell biology which are of great assistance for the characterization of cellular mechanisms related with the action of novel antibiotics. In 2013 she moved to Instituto de Medicina Molecular to pursue a Post-Doctoral experience; there she started studying viral-derived peptides with biomedical interest. In the context of this project and already at IST, she implemented and optimized advanced fluorescence imaging methods, aiming to characterize bacterial biofilm structure during treatment with antimicrobial agents. In the same research line, she and other collaborators have identified novel class of synthetic mimics of AMPs, having a national and international patent applications [Portuguese Patent Nº. 116802, (granted in 21.04.2023). International Patent, Nº. 50030, (filled in 01.10.2021)]. Scientific merit in the past 5 years. In the past 5 years she: - authored and co-authored a total of 54 (34 in last 5 years) ISI-indexed papers - authored and co-authored 35 communications in conferences (16 talks and 19 posters). - was the Principal Investigator of 1 FCT exploratory project (2022.03627.PTDC) which in total amounted to 50.000,00 EUR. - was the co-Principal Investigator of 1 FCT exploratory project (EXPL/BTM-MAT/0910/2021) which in total amounted to 50.000,00 EUR. - was the co-Principal Investigator of the project OSTEOGLUTIS which in total amounted 10.000,00 EUR. This project won the 3rd edition of the Multiple Myeloma Research Fellowship created by the Portuguese Association against Leukemia (APCL) and the Portuguese Society of Hematology (SPH), with the support of Amgen Biopharmaceutical. - Supervised and co-supervised 5 ongoing PhD (2020.05203.BD, UI/BD/151062/2021 2023.03240.BD, 2023.03543.BD and 2023.03193.BD), 9 MSc thesis (8 completed and 1 ongoing) and 8 undergraduate students (3 ongoing). - Was a member of the organizing committee of 2019 and 2023 MicroDia in IST (microscopy Open Day) and the 1st iBB Workshop (Fostering Collaborative Research) and 3rd iBB Workshop. - Participated as guest editor for the journals Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology topic editor https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/60365/exploring-advanced-tools-and-techniques-for-studying-biofilms Pharmaceutics (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/pharmaceutics/special_issues/5FFPG839N7); Antibiotics (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/antibiotics/special_issues/bacterial_biofilm) Molecules (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/molecules/special_issues/nanotherapeutics) and as topic editor for MDPI (https://www.mdpi.com/topics/697178B65N). - Reviewed more than 30 papers for different ISI-indexed journals (https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/record/1626649).
