I am a Principal Researcher at the Institute of Physics for Advanced Materials, Nanotechnology and Photonics (IFIMUP), Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. I am also the Vice-Director of the Micro- and Nano-Fabrication Unit of the University of Porto (CEMUP-MNTEC) and Vice-President of IFIMUP. Since 2023, I am the Chief Executive Officer of inanoEnergy, a UP spin-off company. I obtained my PhD in Physics from the University of Porto (UP) in 2006. In 2008, I became a Senior Researcher at IFIMUP and an Invited Professor at UP. In 2012, I was elected President of IFIMUP and appointed member of the Executive Commission of the Associate Laboratory, Institute of Nanosciencies and Nanotechnologies (IN). In this role, I strongly collaborated in the implementation of the “Strengthening and Requalification of the Infrastructure for Micro/Nanofabrication of the University of Porto” project led by the UP Rectorate (1.7 M€) for the construction of a new 200 m2 ISO6/ISO7 clean room, now serving the University of Porto. My research on Advanced energy harvesters based on triboelectric nanogenerators aims to develop nanogenerators that can harvest mechanical energy from the large variety of sources available in our everyday life to power low-consumption electronics and sensors using the triboelectric effect. In this respect, I have been focusing on applications in harsh environments, including for the maritime and oil & gas sectors. As international recognition for my research in this area, I am an Editorial Board Member of Nanoenergy Advances and a Guest Editor of the Nano Energy Special Issue on triboelectricity advances in Europe and North America. My research on Neuromorphic computation and neural interfaces is based on memristive devices (history dependent nano-electronic components), whose dynamical properties and adaptation to external stimulus strongly resemble those of neural synapses. Profiting from a strong collaboration with i3S, my main aim is to develop the capabilities to link neuromorphic electronics with biological neurons, bringing together advanced physical engineering and biology in a multidisciplinary approach. Recently, we were able to develop the first neuro-electronic platform capable of a bi-directional interaction between biological neurons and artificial neural elements based on memristors. To support these research activities, I was able to attain over 2.0 M€ of funding for my own institution from a large number of renowned international and national institutions, such as the European Commission (EIC Pathfinder, ATTRACT, COST Association), the European Space Agency, La Caixa Foundation, the Lloyd's Register Foundation or Repsol Foundation. At present, I am the Principal Investigator (PI)/co-PI of 2 funded FCT projects and the Local coordinator of 4 international projects. In addition, I already successfully completed the coordination of funded projects as PI (8; 3 international) and as National (2) or Local (8) Coordinator. I am/was a key member in over 50 National and European projects obtained in competitive calls totaling over 20 M€. My research activities resulted in the (co-)authorship of 1 book, 8 book chapters, 190+ scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals (including Nature Nanotechnology, Energy & Environmental Science, Advanced Energy Materials, Nano Energy or Physical Review Letters; 109+ publications in Q1 journals, 160+ in Q1, Q2). My published work has received over 4900 citations, ensuing an h-index of 37 and an i10-index of 123 (source: google scholar). I co-authored more than 250 communications (over 30 invited) in international conferences and 1 granted and 4 pending patent applications. Presently, I am the advisor of 2 postdoctoral researchers, 9 PhD and 4 MSc students, having already completed the supervision of 7 postdoctoral researchers, 6 PhD and 42 MSc students.
