I have always been interested in how the tight control of the molecular processes of a cell are needed for the correct function of an organism and how their deregulation can lead to pathologies. Thus, I studied a BSc in Biology (Universidade do Porto) and later a MSc in Molecular Genetics (Universidade do Minho). Given my early interest in research, I decided to complete my training through gaining hands-on experience in different laboratories, including the laboratories of Dr. Teixeira and Dr. Preto during my BSc and MSc thesis in Portugal, and later on at the laboratories of Dr. Clarke at the MRC (United Kingdom) and Dr. Fidalgo at CIMUS (Spain) abroad. As a result of my contributions to several research projects of these labs, I am the co-author of 8 articles, including a first-author paper in the European Journal of Medical Chemistry. During these years, I have also attended several national and international conferences where I have been able to present my work to peer researchers, allowing me to become more visible in the field. Given my personal interests and previous experiences, I found a unique niche of research at the Center of Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CIMUS), at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) in Spain, to do my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Fidalgo and Dr. Guallar. These two research groups happen to unite the aspects of research which are more appealing to me: Epitranscriptomics, ageing and obesity. Being granted with a competitive FCT 2021 PhD Studentship will be definitive to push forward my long-term career goal, which is to become an independent researcher in Portugal in the exciting field of RNA modifications in the context of public health challenges such as obesity and ageing.
