Pedro Miguel Santos completed the PhD in Biomedical Sciences at University of Porto, Portugal (2002). He was awarded with a post-doctoral grant at Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences, IST (2002-2007). In 2008, he was hired as Invited Assistant Professor in the context of MIT-Portugal. He is an Assistant Professor at University of Minho and integrated member of the Center for Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA), since September 2008. He leads a research team focused on bacterial functional genomics, bacterial physiology and molecular biology, microbiomes and bioinformatics. Published 39 articles in journals (ORCID: 0000-0003-3234-4265). Has 1 book chapter. In his professional activities interacted with over 220 collaborators through co-authorship of scientific papers. Coordinated 3 research projects, as Principal investigator: BIOMYR: Towards the metabolic engineering of beta-myrcene pathway of Pseudomonas sp. M1: functional genomics and structural biochemistry approaches (PTDC/EBB-BIO/104980/2008); Wastewater reuse: improving the odds by understanding natural attenuation (ERANET, Inn-INDIGO/0004/2014); Towards the valorization of eucalyptus waste using Pseudomonas-based biocatalysts (PTDC/EAM-AMB/30488/2017). Participated in 13 research projects and was the local coordinator of National infrastructure network Genome PT(PINFRA/22184/2016). Currently, he is member of ARNET- Aquatic Research Network (LA/P/0069/2020). It is noteworthy, his contribution for: i) the elucidation of different bacterial molecular adaptation mechanisms to solvents and terpenes; ii) the description of unsual metabolic pathways such as those associated with metabolism of the monoterpene myrcene; iii) description of cetacean microflora and associated health statuses; iv) genomic heterogeneity among Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates; v) implementation of local infrastructures for genomics (MinION, Oxford Nanopore), proteomics (2-DE) and bioinformatics (server infrastructure and customized workflows for microbial genome and microbiome data analyses). Is Associated Editor in Evolutionary and Genomic Microbiology (Frontiers). He is member of the Directive Board of the Doctoral Program in Biology (since 2018) and of the Master Program in Molecular Genetics (since 2020). Supervised/co-Supervised 4 Post-doctoral fellows (BPD/GenomePT-CBMA/2018; BPD1/wrana/2017; SFRH/BPD/102006/2014; SFRH/BPD/86475/2012) and 5 PhD theses (SFRH/BD/113216/2015; SFRH/BD/98558/2013; SFRH/BD/76894/2011; SFRH/BD/80407/2011; SFRH/BD/38805/2007). Currently, is supervising 1 PhD thesis on bacterial enhanced performance through Adaptative Laboratory Evolution and co-supervising(PD/BD/146184/2019) 1 on the effect of mycorrizhization on soil microbiome (2023.04178.BDANA). Supervised over 15 MSc theses. Current scientific interests are: i) exploitation of the intricate ability of Pseudomonas spp. to tolerate, adapt and thrive in challenging environments (e.g. oligotrophic, polluted). Such competence holds great potential, as a source of novel biomolecules and cell factories, for different biotechnological applications, namely in the fields of biocatalysis, biosensors, and bioremediation; ii) characterization and exploitation of marine microbiome diversity and dynamics as biomonitoring and innovative biotech tools.
