Sónia Pedro has completed her Bachelor and Master degree in Biochemistry in the University of Aveiro, where is at the moment a PhD student in the Biochemistry filed. Her domain of specialization in the Master degree, Clinical Biochemistry, provided her an advanced training in the field of health sciences, with special emphasis on laboratory diagnosis and study of the molecular mechanisms underlying the disease, knowledge of the determination of biochemical and physiological parameters and its application to the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring or prevention of diseases. Her current research interests are focused on: purification and quantification of cancer biomarkers; clinical diagnosis; prevention and treatment of diseases; study and development of novel drug delivery systems; preparation and characterization of DES comprising active pharmaceutical ingredients; incorporation of novel formulations of DES comprising active pharmaceutical ingredients into biopolymer-based drug delivery systems, which may ultimately stand out as effective treatment options for a widespread number of biomedical applications and biomaterials characterization. Presents other professional interests/competences, like: knowledge in laboratorial diagnosis techniques; determination techniques of biochemical parameters; biological human sample manipulation; competences in several distinct quantification methods, like spectrophotometric quantification assays for proteins and sugars, immunoassay (Blitz) and molecular methods like PCR; experience in the use of SDS-PAGE, UV spectrophotometer and liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipment; experience in liquid-liquid extraction with Aqueous Biphasic Systems (ABS), handling and use of ionic liquids; experience in preparation of deep eutectic solvents and characterization; experience in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) interpretation data.
