Patrícia Costa Reis is a Pediatric Rheumatologist and a Pediatric Nephrologist at Hospital de Santa Maria, an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in Faculdade de Medicina - Universidade de Lisboa, a member of the Portuguese Technical Committee on Vaccines and a researcher at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM). She is committed to the study of the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus, in order to find new clinically relevant pathways. On her Ph.D., Patrícia Costa Reis focused on the epigenetics of lupus nephritis, conducting her research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia - University of Pennsylvania. Her findings were published in several scientific journals, including two papers at Arthritis and Rheumatology, as first author, and a review at Nature Rev Rheum. Her work showed that HER2 controls mesangial cell proliferation in lupus nephritis and that urinary HER2 is a biomarker of disease activity. These findings established strong foundations for the use of the already available anti-HER2 drugs for lupus nephritis treatment. A pediatric prospective multicenter study showing the clinical value of urinary HER2 to predict a lupus nephritis flare was recently published. Patrícia Costa Reis was granted a patent for the clinical use of HER2 in lupus nephritis. Patrícia Costa Reis is an author of 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals (total number of citations 476 and h-index=8) and an author of 116 scientific communications in national and international meetings, including oral communications at the ACR, EULAR and PRSYM meetings, as first author. She has been invited to give 38 talks, including 2 talks for the ERN Transplantchild. Patrícia Costa Reis is the head of the Research Center of the Pediatrics Department in Hospital de Santa Maria. She has supervised 14 Medicine Master Students and 2 MSc students. She is currently supervising 2 PhD and 2 Medicine Master Students and 3 Pediatrics residents. She is a reviewer of 15 scientific journals and she has been a jury for several prizes and grants, including the Agence Nationale de la Recherche - ANR 2019. Patrícia Costa Reis has participated in the Pint of Science initiative and in interviews for televisions, radio stations and newspapers to promote scientific awareness in the community. Patrícia Costa Reis was awarded with the Salomão Sequerra Amram Excellence in Medicine Award 1999-2005, the Lupus Foundation of America Preceptorship Award 2012 and the L'Oréal, FCT, UNESCO Prize for Women in Science 2018. Patrícia Costa Reis is a member of the consortium ENDOTARGET, which has been funded with an Horizon grant to study the gut-joint axis and the connection of endotoxemia with chronic inflammation.
