Graduation in Physics Engineering by the University of Coimbra, Portugal. PhD in Physics by the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany. Worked at the German heavy ion tumor therapy project for 7.5 years as PhD candidate and as postdoc researcher. Work involved physical and technological developments, and participation in the treatment of more than 200 cancer patients with carbon ion radiotherapy at GSI in Darmstadt. Co-invented 2 patents granted to his former laboratory HZDR in Dresden, Germany. Works since 2007 in Portugal at LIP Coimbra, as principal investigator since 2009. Lectured for 3 years at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra and is assistant professor at the Physics Department of the University of Coimbra since 2013. Co-authored 48 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and 42 publications in international conference records. IoP (Institute of Physics) awarded to one of his first-author publication in Phys. Med. Biol. the highlight of 2006, an yearly distinction to the top 10 scientific articles of largest impact within the journal. Co-authored 4 chapters in 2 books in nuclear medicine, is a reviewer of 10 different journals and has refereed, by invitation, international funding projects amounting to above 1 million EUR. Co-author of the proposal of the project Rad4Life, which was financed with 1.2 million EUR between July 2013 and September 2015. Has supervised 14 master theses and 4 doctoral works at the University of Coimbra. Presently working on (1) R&D of imaging devices for assisting and potentially improving the effectiveness of external X- ray and proton beam radiotherapy (orthogonal X-rays, prompt gamma imaging, and in-beam time-of-flight positron emission tomography–PET), (2) PET with resistive plate chambers, and (3) new device for deep- and whole-brain transcranial magnetic stimulation. Attracted more than 400 thousand EUR to be managed by LIP Coimbra in the last 4 years, distributed over several of the aforementioned lines of research.
