Isabella Bonati is currently an Assistant Researcher at the Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, Centro de Estudos Clássicos, where she is supported by the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology), through the project 2021.00964.CEECIND entitled 'History of medicine and diseases: From the ancient testimony of Greek papyri to modern practice'. She has previously worked at the North-West University (School of Ancient Languages and Text Studies) in Potchefstroom, South Africa, as a Post-Doctoral Researcher with funds from the South African National Research Foundation and as a Temporary Lecturer of Classical Greek, Latin and Classical Rhetoric. In 2014-2016, she completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Papyrology at the Department of Letters, Arts, History and Society (L.A.S.S.) of the University of Parma, Italy, where she was involved in research activities within the ERC project DIGMEDTEXT ('Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts', grant number 339828). She holds an M.A. in Classics and a PhD in Ancient History (curr. Papyrology) from the University of Parma. In 2012, she received a Yggdrasil grant from the Norwegian Research Council (grant number 219415) to work as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Oslo (IFIKK - Institutt for filosofi, ide- og kunsthistorie og klassiske språk - Deparment of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas). This grant was exceptionally extended with funds from the Department IFIKK itself (2013). Between 2017 and 2022, she was an Instructor of Papyrology for the Paideia Institute (New York). Her main research interests are concerned with papyrology, especially lexical studies, and ancient medicine. Other research interests include classical philology, Greek and Latin language and literature, linguistics, digital approaches to antiquity, archaeology and material culture. She has published several book chapters in peer-reviewed volumes and articles in international journals, such as 'Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik' (ZPE), 'Marburger Beiträge zur Antiken Handels-, Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte' (MBAH), 'Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists' (BASP), and 'Early Science and Medicine' (ESM). She published the two monographs 'Glosse esotiche nei frammenti di Ipponatte. Gli esotismi nella lingua del giambografo di Efeso' (Voces Peregrinae in the Fragments of Hipponax. Foreign Loan-words in the Language of the Iambographer of Ephesus), VDM Verlag, Saarbrücken 2015, and 'Il lessico dei vasi e dei contenitori greci nei papiri. Specimina per un repertorio lessicale degli angionimi greci' (The Vocabulary of Greek Vases and Containers in the Papyri. She is co-editor (with Gabriel Silva) of the volume 'The Words of Medicine: Technical Terminology in Material and Textual Evidence from the Graeco-Roman World', which is forthcoming in De Gruyter's series 'Science, Technology, and Medicine in Ancient Cultures'.
