I am an Associate Professor at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon, where I am a member of the Department for Classical Studies and the Vice-Director of the Centre for Classical Studies (CEC). My academic career started in 2003 as an Invited Assistant at the School of Arts and Humanities (and a member of CEC), where I completed a PhD in Classics (Ego Liber: Livros que falam no epigrama latino/ Speaking Books in Latin Eprigram), became an Assistant with tenure in 2019 and won a call for Associate Professor in 2022. I study Greco-Latin literature. My main areas of research are Flavian poetry (I CE Rome) and Hellenistic epigram (III BCE Greece to I CE Rome), with a particular interest in textual transmission. My study of Statius’ Silvae and Martial’ epigrams, dismissed for centuries as second-rate poetry, studies how and why they do not fit, and overtly defy, traditional labels by their ability to reshape, reinvent, and renegotiate poetry in the mutable context of the end of the first century. I collaborate with the National Museum of Archaeology, which provides me with the opportunity to be involved in activities of impact to non-academic audiences, such as virtual exhibitions for Google Arts and Culture. As vice-Director of CEC, a charge that has shaped my academic life since 2017, I deal with problems and tasks of the highest relevance for the academic community. I am actively involved in financing, internationalization, rethinking the scope of Classics and new challenges posed to the discipline, establishing goals for CEC as contributer to worldwide research in Classics, contributing to society. Still in CEC, I am the PI of the team Imperialia, which deals mainly with Latin imperial literature (I-II CE). This team distinguishes itself by the effective impact of its outputs, directed to wide-circulation books and journals, and the organisation of conferences of high quality and worldwide reach.
