Daniel Moreira completed his Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences in 2011, followed by a Master's in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2014, and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2017, all from the University of Brasília (UnB), Brazil. His thesis was awarded the Best Thesis in Life Sciences Great Award by the University of Brasília. Since 2019, he is a full research collaborator in the postgraduate program in Medical Sciences at the University of Brasília's medical school. In Feb-2023 to Aug-2024, he was a research collaborator at the Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, focusing on "Biosensing technologies for advanced and quantitative molecular profiling", which resulted in a paper in Advanced Materials Technologies. In Portugal, he also worked as a postdoctoral researcher with external funding in the Glial Cell Biology Group at the i3S - Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, University of Porto, where he explored the effects of a peptide derived from Brazilian biodiversity on microglia modulation. Since 2017, Moreira has held the position of Biologist (Researcher in Biology) at the Faculty of Medicine, UnB, where he conducts and collaborates on research in biology, biotechnology, and applied health sciences. This includes leading projects funded by agencies such as CNPq and FAPDF at the Research Center in Morphology and Applied Immunology (NuPMIA) at UnB. His research interests focus on redox processes in biology and medicine, primarily investigating the role and underlying mechanisms of redox metabolism in animals during metabolic rate depression induced by environmental stressors. These projects explore antioxidant system modulation in animals under oxygen deprivation and other metabolic depression conditions. Concurrently, he is investigating bioactive compounds (e.g., secretion peptides from anurans, plant extracts, and phytochemicals) for health applications. Moreira has published 53 articles in peer-reviewed journals, with 15 as first author and other four with shared first-authorship, and he has lead-authored two book chapters. He has delivered several oral presentations at international congresses and has been recognized with the Inspiration and Resilience Award from the Biochemical Society (2025), celebrating his contributions to redox biology and molecular biosciences, as well as his perseverance and success in advancing research despite limited resources. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for over 40 international journals in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, and redox biology and medicine, including Frontiers in Physiology, PLoS One, Aquatic Toxicology, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Cell Biochemistry and Function, Journal of Experimental Biology, and Scientific Reports. He is an editorial board member for PeerJ Life & Environment, Frontiers in Physiology (Redox Physiology section), and Frontiers in Marine Science (Aquatic Physiology section), and has guest-edited six special issues for several journals. Additionally, Moreira has acted as an ad hoc expert consultant for national (Brazil) and international research funding agencies. His expertise spans Natural Sciences with a focus on Biological Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences with an emphasis on Medical Biotechnology, and Exact Sciences with a focus on Analytical Chemistry.
