Beatriz Lourenço Vaz is a PhD student, currently enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (PDBEB) from the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra (UC). She has received an FCT PhD scholarship to develop her PhD work entitled “Harnessing RNA-based cell fate reprogramming for cancer immunotherapy” under the supervision of Doctor Carlos Filipe Pereira at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC) and the co-supervision of Doctor Cristian Bellodi at the Lund University. For the past 2 years, she was a research assistant at Carlos Filipe Pereira’s lab - Immune Cell Reprogramming lab - at CNC-UC, under the project “CiNTech – Technological Hub for Innovation, Translation, and Industrialization of Complex Injectable Drugs”. She has been broadening her knowledge in cellular reprogramming to advance cancer immunotherapy, researching new technologies applicable to the field, and developing new ideas. Being a member of this dynamic research group allowed her to experience a 3-month stay at Lund University as a visiting researcher. This opportunity exposed her to diverse research methodologies and required her to adapt to a distinct academic environment. Beatriz has a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, from the University of Aveiro (UA), and a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, from the University of Coimbra. She developed her MSc thesis in the Structural Biotechnology lab of CNC-UC, under the supervision of Doctor Ricardo Vieira-Pires and Professor Luís Pereira de Almeida. The main goal of her thesis was to produce and characterize novel probes based on IgY antibodies to track the progression of Machado-Joseph disease, which she accomplished. Beatriz is one of the inventors of a patent entitled "RNA-based strategies for dendritic cell reprogramming and uses thereof" and authored 1 oral and 1 poster communication at national and international conferences. She is interested in biotechnology applied to different fields, such as immunology and oncology.
