Zach Hensel completed his PhD in Molecular Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University in the laboratory of Dr. Jie Xiao, where he studied single-molecule biophysics problems in gene regulation in E. coli. He then completed postdoctoral work in projects linking single-molecule microscopy and computational biophysics at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). Since 2017, Dr. Hensel runs the Single Molecule Microbiology lab at ITQB NOVA, within the MOSTMICRO research unit. His lab studies gene regulation and cell division at the single-molecule level in living microbial cells, with a focuses on imaging single mRNA and protein molecules and on investigating structures of protein complexes predicted by deep learning. The lab has built two hybrid commercial/DIY microscope for single-molecule imaging. His interests include advances in rapid and reproducible dissemination of scientific results (i.e. preprints and executable research articles).
