Miguel Mesquita Duarte’s research examines the relationships between film, memory, and history, focusing on the role of archival images and oral discourse in non-fiction cinema and essay film. He addresses the limits and possibilities of film - photography and cinema - in conveying traumatic historical events and constructing non-normative multi-directional memories. In an interdisciplinary approach, and drawing on theoretical and practice-led research, Duarte explores issues related to aesthetics and documentary politics; the interplay of images and words as forms of testimony; and the relationships between visual storytelling and autobiographical memory. His recent research focuses on performative testimony and postcolonial memory in Portuguese non-fiction films and documentaries in the first person. He is the author of Imagem de Arquivo e Tempo Mnemotécnico / Archival Image and Mnemonic Time. Covilhã: LabCom.IFP Books, 2018.
