Catarina has a PhD in Marine Biology (2015) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, a MSc in Coastal and Oceanic Systems (2011) from Universidade Federal do Paraná, Brazil, and a BSc in Biology (2008) from Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal. Currently she is a Researcher at Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal, and an Adjunct Research Fellow at James Cook University, Australia. Her research has mainly focused on applying multidisciplinary and innovative methods to fisheries research, understanding the processes related to marine population dynamics and also addressing fundamental questions in ecology and evolutionary biology. Since 2021, she has been collaborating with academic institutions (e.g. Nature Research Center, Lithuania, and University of Tasmania, Australia), private companies (Deeper® and Angler’s Atlas®) and Non-Profit Organisations (Fishial) to develop innovative, open-source tools and methods for recreational fisheries data collection and analyses, including using machine learning models to identify fish species and sizes from images. She is a co-founder of the Fish AI Consortium (https://fishaiconsortium.org/), an international initiative that aims to bring together people with an interest in developing and using artificial intelligence tools to study fish population management, ecology and conservation.
