Anita Ferreira Triguinho da Silva is a passionate and dedicated biomedical scientist. She holds a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences, with a final classification of 14 out of 20, awarded in June 2020 from the University of Algarve. She has been pursuing a master’s in Biomedical Sciences, at the same institution, finishing with the final classification of 17 out of 20. The final work of the degree, the monograph, was performed in the Stem Cell Biology group at the Centre for Biomedical Research of the University of Algarve. It was based on validating by qPCR the expression of some genes in response to impairing CITED2’s expression, in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). During this project, she had the opportunity to learn how to maintain mESCs in cell culture, induce a conditional knockout and some lab techniques such as real-time RT-PCR. Her final grade was 17 out of 20. At the same laboratory, she did a volunteer period for approximately 20 months prior to developing her master’s thesis. During this time, she contributed as a co-first author, to a revised article about “Human Stem Cells for Cardiac Disease Modelling and Preclinical and Clinical Applications – Are We on the Road to Success?” (Ferreira et al., 2023, Cells), and was also a member of the “Non-invasive approach to limit congenital heart disease in mammalian embryos in utero” Mariano Gago by ABC project. Recently, she finished her master’s thesis project in the Chromosome Segregation in Disease Lab, at the Algarve Biomedical Center-Research Institute (ABC-Ri), obtaining a grade of 18 out of 20. During this research project, entitled “Study of BUB1 functions during neurodevelopment”, she learned many new lab techniques. The objective of this project was, to generate an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from microcephalic patient cells and deeply analyse their neuronal differentiation process under monolayer conditions, into forebrain cells, comparing with the differentiation of healthy iPSCs. Anita has gained hands-on experience on reprogrammed cells using Sendai Virus with Yamanaka factors, which allowed her to generate two new cell strains, from microcephalic fibroblasts, which are already available to the community (Ferreira et al., 2024). In addition, she did iPSCs culture, 2D spontaneous differentiation, monolayer neuronal differentiation, qPCR, real-time RT-PCR, immunofluorescence, fluorescence microscopy and in vivo manipulation using chicken embryos. The last was used to study, how BUB1 inhibition by compound microinjection in primary brain vesicles, affects the neurodevelopment of the embryo. Her motivation has been recognised, so she has been selected at the competitive call for an MSc student fellowship at the BBBrain project and also, selected as an MSc student for an IEFP internship. Her work has contributed to the publication of two articles in distinct scientific journals, she has participated in scientific events, and scientific activities namely the institute's seminars and in-person presentations, as well as outreach activities and scientific workshops. At the Portuguese Genetic Human Society's 2023 Annual Meeting, her work was displayed as a poster (Jorge, Milagre, Ferreira et al. 2023). Outside of academic life, she worked as a lifeguard for some summer seasons, in the COVID-19 line by producing viral transporter media and as a volunteer for a study of “Avaliação de Microalbuminuria na População Portuguesa”.
