Joao Cardoso is an Auxiliary Professor at the department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at University of Algarve and is a Senior Researcher at the Centre of Marine Sciences in the Comparative Molecular and Integrative Biology (CEIB) group. Holds a Phd in Biological Sciences from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom and a degree in Biotechnology Engineering by the University of Algarve, Portugal. Main research interests: a) Evolution of the GPCR-peptide endocrine/neuroendocrine systems in metazoans and genome evolution, and b) Understanding organismal physiology and adaptations and the effect of climate changes in the marine organisms by looking at mineralization and immunity and the role of the microbiome. His an expert in comparative genomics, omics (transcriptomics, Metagenomics) and molecular and biochemical techniques of marine organisms. Main reach areas of interests are Marine Sciences, Comparative genomics, Endocrinology, Marine Evolution and Seafood Safety. In the last 5 years the PI has brought their expertise to study marine bivalves and identified and characterized key molecular factors and their action in bivalve shell biomineralization and the innate immune response. He was the member of 4 EC funded projects and the PI of 3 FCT funded projects (2 currently on-going) and the Co-Pi of a project funded by the Grand Challenges Explorations from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He has established scientific collaboration with several Universities and is now the PI of a project (FCT-Aga-Khan) that aims to develop technologies to access the quality and safety of mussels in Angola in collaboration with the University of Namibe and to establish the Microbiology and Molecular Biology facilities. He participated in > 55 papers (H-index 23) in international peer review publications (citation > 983) and was the corresponding author for 28 publication and participated in 3 book chapters. He supervised and collaborated in the supervision of (>9) PhD, (>6) Master and several undergraduate thesis and was the main arguer for Master (>6) and PhD (> 10) defenses in several Universities (Portugal and abroad). Collaborated in the organization of 3 international conferences and was part of >90 communications and was invited as speaker in 3 conferences including at the "Sustainable strengthening and safe use of marine and freshwater resources to increase food security in developing countries "session at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters (New York). Serves as a reviewer for several international scientific journals (>80, https://www.webofscience.com/wos/op/peer-reviews/summary) and served as guest-Editor of a special issue for General and Comparative Endocrinology on Peptide-Hormone binding GPCR evolution and is currently editing a special issue for Molecular and celular Endocrinology about Invertebrate Endocrinology. Is a member of the editorial board of Aquaculture and Fisheries Journal (Elsevier), General and Comparative Endocrinology and from Frontiers Endocrinology Series. From 202o to 2022 he was the Managing Editor for Elsevier Journal Ecosystem. Since 2023 is a contracted Auxiliary Professor at the University of Algarve teaching Genetic Engineering, Marine Genomics, Immunology and Molecular Biology to Masters and Undergraduates. He is part of the FCT-ualg Commission for Mobility and member of the Commission of the Masters in Biotechnology. He has been engaged for more than 25 years in the implementation of many outreach scientific activities to the general public and schools and is the CCMAR responsible and contact for the Cientificamente provável program for local schools which in 2021/2022 reached > 2500 students and participated in several outdoor science fairs and activities including the European Researchers Night.
