André João Gabriel Esgalhado obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in 2014 and 2016, respectively. He is currently completing his PhD in Biomedicine at the same institution, supported by a doctoral studentship (UI/BD/151022/2021) from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). His research is conducted at RISE-Health, UBI, in collaboration with the Institute for Transplantation Diagnostics and Cell Therapeutics (ITZ) at the University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU). The main focus of his research is the study of highly differentiated Human Effector-Memory CD8+ T cells, differing in the expression of the tyrosine phosphatase isoform CD45RA. His work explores the molecular mechanisms underlying their generation and differentiation, as well as their potential neuroprotective role in cognition and neurodegenerative diseases. He has extensive expertise in a wide range of laboratory techniques, including isolation, culture and in vitro differentiation of CD8+ T cells and other immune subsets, multiparametric flow cytometry (cell proliferation, differentiation and survival, cell surface receptor expression and intracellular cytokine production), Immunoprecipitation, SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, and ELISA. He has authored or co-authored eight articles in peer-reviewed journals, ten oral presentations, and seventeen posters at national and international scientific conferences. Additionally, he serves as co-head of the Flow Cytometry Unit at RISE-Health, UBI, and has been a member of the organizing committee of two international congresses.
