I am a Microbiologist with an MSc in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the Faculdade de Ciências Universidade de Lisboa (2008). As an undergraduate I conducted my research work at Instituto Nacional de Saúde Dr. Ricardo Jorge (Portugal) with Dra. Mafalda Bourbon, and at MRC-CSC Imperial College London (UK) with Prof. Anne Soutar to study of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and perform in vitro cell biology and biochemical studies for characterizing patient mutations. In 2008 I was selected for the prestigious internship program InovContacto, run by the Portuguese Government to work as an R&D scientist in a biotech company in Denmark. In 2009 I was awarded a competitive individual fellowship from FCT and obtained my PhD degree at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) in 2014, under the supervision of Prof. Michael Lisby. During my PhD studies I started working in the field of genomic instability studying the effect of SUMOylation, a post-translational modification, in the spatiotemporal regulation of DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair and telomere maintenance. To further my research in the genomic instability field, I moved to CABIMER in Seville, to join Prof. Andrés Aguilera for my postdoc and work on the role of R-loops and transcription-replication conflicts in genomic instability and their implication in DNA damage response. As a postdoc I led two main projects and participated in several others, implemented a new line of research in the Aguilera lab and created new tools to allow sophisticated cellular and molecular biology studies at specific DSB sites. During this period, I continued to produce high quality results published in several articles and Methods paper. In 2022 I returned to Portugal, joining Dr. Helder Maiato’s lab at i3S/University of Porto, a leading scientist in the field of cell division, where I continue to develop my research in the molecular mechanisms associated with chromosome instability and cancer, with a particular focus on breast cancer and translational research. Apart from a strong publication record, I have considerable teaching and supervision experience and I have now secured competitive national and international funding, currently leading or co-leading projects for FCT, Fundacion la Caixa and WorldWide Cancer Research.
