Ana Maria Marques Valentim. Graduated in Biology at the University of Coimbra and completed the PhD in Veterinarian Sciences in 2012/03/01 at Porto University, Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS). Is a contracted researcher at the Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular/ Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S), integrated into the Laboratory Animal Science group where she has been developing the research line of anaesthesia refinement in animal models, in collaboration with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD). She is also refining other techniques, such as analgesia, environmental enrichment, and cortisol collection. Is part of the team of trainers of the Laboratory Animal Science course at i3S (the only course accredited by FELASA in Portugal) and participates in external courses. She is involved in a project to create e-learning modules for the Laboratory Animal Science area for the EU Commission as an expert in the recognition of stress and pain and the biology of zebrafish. Published 42 journal articles and 3 book chapters and was guest editor in 3 special issues. Organized several events on soft skills and outreach. Supervised / co-supervised (or ongoing) 4 PhD theses, 3 MSc dissertations, and 8 works of course completion of LSc/BSc. Has been involved in 10 projects, of which 3 as the Principal Investigator. She is currently leading a funded project by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine related to analgesic protocols for fin clipping. Her consolidated expertise in zebrafish animal models, specifically in the areas of anaesthesia, behaviour, and laboratory animal science, allows her to make substantial contributions to improving animal welfare and minimizing the impact of confounding factors in research, such as anaesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia. In addition to her focus on animal welfare, Ana Maria is committed to enhancing the zebrafish model for research purposes. For instance, she is involved in developing behavioural assessments to study SCA37 models and other diseases like diabetes using zebrafish. She is now a board member of the Zebrafish Husbandry Association (ZHA; 2025), a member of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) ethical committee, and a member of the management committee of a Cost action related to affective states in animals (AFFECT-EVO).
