Dr. Farzana Sabir is currently a Researcher at the research center Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture, and Food (LEAF), Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), University of Lisbon, Portugal, where she is a member of Group III – Eco-novel Food and Feed and actively contributes to the Grapevine and Wine Platform. Her ongoing research primarily focuses on membrane transport mechanisms, particularly the functional characterization and regulation of aquaporins (water channel proteins) in plants under stress conditions. Her work explores the physiological relevance of aquaporins in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) and cork oak (Quercus suber L.), two plant species of high economic importance in Portugal. In parallel, Dr. Sabir has been associated with the Research Institute for Medicines (iMED.ULisboa), as a member of the Biological Transport Group within the Metabolism and Genetics (MetGen) division. Her integrative research approach combines plant biotechnology, membrane biophysics, and yeast-based heterologous expression systems to elucidate the molecular dynamics, gating, and regulation of individual plant aquaporins. Following her Ph.D. (2011), she relocated to Portugal as a Postdoctoral Researcher, joining the Microbiology and Wine Science Group at ISA and becoming a member of the Centro de Botânica Aplicada à Agricultura (CBAA). She was awarded with FCT Post-doctoral grant (2012). Over the years, she has established herself as a leading contributor in the field of plant aquaporin biology, developing an integrated research line that bridges molecular biology, plant physiology, and applied biotechnology for improving crop resilience and productivity. Dr. Sabir obtained her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP–CSIR) and Integral University, Lucknow, India, in 2011. Her doctoral research focused on secondary metabolite biosynthesis in Withania somnifera, elucidating the metabolic pathways involved in the accumulation of pharmaceutically important compounds under stress conditions. She earned her Master’s degree in Biotechnology (2002) and Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (1999) from Deen Dayal Upadhaya Gorakhpur University, India. Dr. Sabir has played an active role in multiple national and international research collaborations. She has participated in 11 funded projects, securing 3 individual research grants, and contributed significantly to advancing the understanding of plant water transport under abiotic stress. Her scientific productivity includes 24 peer-reviewed international journal articles, 3 book chapters, and 19 conference communications. She currently holds an h-index of 18 (Scopus). Dr. Sabir has supervised 18 Master’s and Bachelor’s theses, in addition to providing informal supervision to several Ph.D. and postdoctoral researchers.
