Farzana Sabir received her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP-CSIR) and Integral University, Lucknow, India, in 2011. She got her Master´s degree in Biotechnology (2002) and Bachelor´s degree in Biological Sciences (1999) by Deen Dayal Upadhaya Gorakhpur University, India. After finishing the Ph.D., she moved to Portugal as a Post-doctoral researcher and became part of the research group ¿Microbiology and Wine Science¿ with the platform ¿Vineyard and Wine Platform¿ , and a member of the Research Centre Centro de Botânica Aplicada à Agricultura (CBAA), Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), Portugal. Currently, she is associated as a contracted Researcher with Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture, and Food (LEAF), a member of Group III- ¿Eco-novel Food and Feed¿ and to ¿Grapevine and Wine¿ platform in ISA. During this period, she has also been associated with Research Institute for Medicines (iMED.ULisboa), a member of Biological Transport Group, which is a part of ¿Metabolism and Genetics MetGen,¿ group. Since 2011, she has been developing the research work in the area of water channels, aquaporins. Her scientific interests are focused on understanding the membrane water transport mechanisms and their regulation in plants, especially under stress. Grapevine and cork oak, the two high economic important plants for Portugal, are her main plants to explore the relevance of aquaporins. She has been utilizing the yeast as an expression system to characterize individual plants aquaporins with particular emphasis on their regulation and gating. On the other hand, her Ph.D. dissertation was mainly centered on medicinal plants to understand the biosynthesis of pharmaceutically important secondary metabolites, their accumulation, and physiological significance in plants, especially under stress. Her work contributed to understanding the metabolic pathway of the secondary metabolite synthesis in a medicinal plant Withania somnifera. With the background of Plant Biotechnology and the acquired knowledge in the area of aquaporins and Membrane Biophysics of plants and yeast, she has developed her own scientific topics with an integrated approach, together with other members of the research group. She has been involved in 8 funded projects, in which she bagged 3 individual grants. Works accomplished in these themes were published as 2 book chapters, 24 indexed peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals, 18 communications in international and national conferences. She has an h-index of 12, with 429 citations (self-citations excluded). Sabir has supervised 10 Master´s/bachelor´s thesis, besides informal supervision of many Ph.D. and Post-doctoral fellows.
