Completed the Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, respectively, in 2015/07/06 and 2017/11/06. Tiago Carvalho works in the area of Natural Sciences with an emphasis in Biological Sciences, namely on Cancer Biology. The research work performed within the dissertation for obtaining the MSc degree was focused on the action of endocrine disrupting chemicals and their possible damaging effects towards the development of prostate cancer. After finishing the master thesis, Tiago Carvalho worked in a project about the relationship between adenosine and chromosomal instability: a new perspective to understand the oncogenic mechanism in glioblastoma. After that, Tiago finished his PhD Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network Program at University of Bari, Italy, investigating the role of an acidic pHe and hypoxia in the context of the tumor microenvironment on driving the basic hallmarks of pancreatic cancer. The main objective was the establishment of a 3D organotypic culture model that allowed us to understand and better predict the therapeutic responses for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Subsequently, Tiago Carvalho returned to Portugal and earned a FCT postdoctoral fellowship to conduct research activities in the University of Beira Interior. His project was related to drug resistance and tumor microenvironment in prostate cancer, focusing on discovering new drug resistance mechanisms associated with tumor microenvironment that affect the efficacy of chemotherapy in prostate cancer. More recently, Tiago received another postdoctoral fellowship, at the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Lisbon, to develop and characterize new CAR-T cell therapy responsive to tumor microenvironment in breast cancer. As a product of Tiago's research activities, he published 20 articles (4 of them as first-author) in international indexed peer-review journals. With an accumulated impact factor of 121.888, an average impact factor of 6.0944 and around 350 citations, Tiago Carvalho has an h-index of 11. Moreover, Tiago has participated also in several oral communications (10), being awarded with a best oral communication for young scientist, and in several scientific poster presentations (18). In parallel with the research activity, Tiago Carvalho supervised 2 MSc students, 3 BSc student and 1 Medical Student and participated as a public examination jury member of a MSc student thesis exam. Additionally, Tiago also became responsible for teaching activities (both theoretical and practical lessons) of the module “Endocrine System” of the curricular unit “Human Physiology and Anatomy II” for the 2nd year of the 1st cycle (BSc) in Biomedical Sciences. Furthermore, Tiago Carvalho has several administrative positions, namely being an Ambassador of the European Association of Cancer Research (EACR) and and active member of the COST ACTION (CA21135 – Immunomodel). He also participated in the organization of several national and international congresses and in the implementation of several outreach activities. Lasty, Tiago also started his activity as ad hoc scientific journal reviewer in 3 journals such as “Cancers” and “Kinases and Phosphatases”. Moreover, he also belong to the panel of guest editors for a special Issue called “Drug Resistance and Tumor Microenvironment in Human Cancers” in the journal “Biomedicines”.
