Rita Gaspar is a research assistant at MIA Portugal, University of Coimbra, having earned her Ph.D. in Ageing and chronic Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (2021), M.Sc. in Biology at the University of Coimbra (2010) and B.Sc. in Biology (2009) from the University Coimbra. During her doctoral studies she investigated the impact of microglia on susceptibility to depression and sex differences. Rita´s research has led to: i) discovery of the interaction between glucocorticoid receptors and adenosine A2A receptors and the potential therapeutic value of modulating adenosine A2A receptors activation to prevent glucocorticoid-induced alterations in developing neurons (Front Pharmacol. 2018; doi: 10.3389/fphar.2018.00219); ii) reinforcement of the link between microglia function and the control of mood and memory, emphasizing the importance of gender and brain region in the screening or design of novel therapeutic strategies targeting glial cells homeostasis to manage brain disorders (Glia, 2019; doi: 10.1002/glia.23476); iii) unveiled that sex-specific differences in microglia plasticity induced by long-term stress exposure may anticipate differences in drug efficacy in the context of stress-induced anxiety- or depression-related behaviours (Neurobiol Stress, 2021; doi: 10.1016/j.ynstr.2021.100302). She is the first author of 5 (in journals such as Glia and Neurobiology of Stress) and coauthor of 7 "peer-reviewed" publications (including in the journal Molecular Psychiatry). Rita has strong expertise in cellular and molecular biology techniques (PCR; DNA and RNA isolation; Western Blotting, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, ELISA assays; genotyping); primary cell cultures (hippocampal) and retinal organotypic cultures; fluorescence and confocal microscopy. Rita Gaspar frequently engage in outreaching activities, namely Brain Awareness Week, European Researchers Night and educational activities for high school students and the general public to disseminate scientific knowledge and curiosity about science.
