Cristina Maria Santos Alves de Carvalho Barrias
CC Barrias is a Principal Investigator and Group Leader at i3S – Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (University
of Porto, Portugal, www.i3s.up.pt), a member of the Board of Directors of INEB – Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica, and an
invited Associate Professor at ICBAS – Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar.
With a background in biomaterials and tissue engineering, she leads the Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments Group at i3S. Her
research focuses on developing strategies for tissue, organ, and organoid vascularization, using microtissues as living biomaterials,
in combination with 3D bioprinting and microfluidic technologies.
Beyond research, Barrias is actively involved in the scientific community. She currently serves as the Vice-President and
Journal Liaison Officer of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB) and is the Managing Editor of Materials Today Bio (Elsevier).
She also contributes as an expert evaluator for Horizon Europe and reviews grant applications for programs such as ERC, MSCA,
and Pathfinder, as well as national programs, such as FCT scholarships and scientific project reports.
Leadership and Mentorship: C. Barrias has extensive experience in grant writing and research leadership, having participated
in 44 funded national and international projects (14 as PI/Co-PI). Since 2008, she has mentored numerous young researchers,
securing funding from organizations such as FCT, INL, La Caixa, MSCA-ITN, and FLAD. A committed mentor, she has supervised
11 researchers with PhD, 20 PhD students, 33 MSc students, and several research trainees across multidisciplinary fields.
She has also built collaborations with hospitals, industry partners, and international research consortia, including Horizon
Europe, H2020, and COST actions.
Publications & Scientific Contributions: C.Barrias has co-authored over 100 scientific papers and 9 book chapters. Her work
has received significant recognition, with an h-index of 43 and more than 6,700 citations (Google Scholar, Feb 2025). She
has been an invited speaker at over 100 conferences and has contributed to 250+ scientific communications at international
meetings.
