CC Barrias is Principal Investigator and Group Leader at i3S-Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saude (UP, www.i3s.up.pt), member of the Board of Directors of INEB-Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (UP), and invited Associate Professor at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS, UP) and at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP, IPP). She is currently acting as the Vice-President and Journal Liaison Officer of the ESB-European Society for Biomaterials (www.esbiomaterials.eu), and as Managing Editor of Materials Today Bio journal (Elsevier). She is an internationally recognized expert in (living) biomaterials for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and 3D in vitro models. Her group (Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments, www.i3s.up.pt/research-group.php?groupid=126) is currently focused on the development of strategies for tissue/organ/organoid vascularization, combining microtissues, 3D bioprinting, and vessel-on-chip technologies. GRANT WRITING, LEADERSHIP & MENTORSHIP: Since 1999, CC Barrias participated in 42 national/international funded projects (14 as PI/Co-PI/local PI). Since 2008, she has attracted several young researchers to work on her projects, securing national (FCT, INL) & international (LA CAIXA, MSCA-ITN, FLAD, CAPES) fellowships/contracts. She secured her contract salary for several years, by applying to highly competitive calls as a Research Associate (FCT program Ciencia2008 and IF2013) and as a Principal Investigator (IF2015), and she has held a permanent position at i3S/INEB since 2017. She was the leader of the Biomatrix Team (i3S/INEB, 2014-2017), acting Group Leader of the Biocarrier Group (i3S/INEB, 2017-2019, and established her group at i3S in 2018. She has solid experience in mentorship: 12 researchers with Ph.D. (currently 7), 18 Ph.D. students (11 completed, 1 waiting for public defense, 6 ongoing), and 33 MSc students (all completed), and several research trainees with multidisciplinary backgrounds. She established translational collaborations with clinicians at different hospitals (CHUSJ, CHUSA, Porto) and the Cardiovascular Center (UL); and with companies (Bioceramed, Orgavalue in PT; Grifols in SP). INTERNATIONALIZATION: She did part of her Ph.D. at UBordeaux (FR) and did her Post-Doc in collaboration with U Nevada-Reno (US). She has numerous collaborations with world-leading scientists, namely via joint supervision of Ph.D. students and participation in international projects. She has been consistently increasing her participation in international consortiums, namely in HE and H2020 projects (EraChair, MSCA-ITN, TWINNING, La Caixa), Interreg EU (IBEROS), and COST actions (CA16122, CA16119, CA18216, CA18125). OTHER SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES: 1) Expert Evaluator in Horizon Europe; 2) Grant Reviewer (e.g., MSCA H2020/HE, FNRS, ANR, IJUP, LIT, IFRO, FCT); 3) Editorial activities (Managing Ed. Materials Today Bio, Associate Ed. Frontiers Bioeng Biotechnol, Ed Board J Appl Biomat Func Mat); 4) Member of Academic Juries (40 Ph.D. Theses, 26 MSc Theses); 5) Referee for numerous peer-reviewed journals, Abstract Revision for national/international meetings; and 6) Scientific/Organizing Committee of national /international events. PUBLICATIONS: She co-authored 97 papers (h-index 41, CIT>6028; GoogleScholar Apr 2024), 9 book chapters, and 5 patents. She has been invited lecturer in >98 conferences/advanced schools/ seminars, and co-author of >200 communications in scientific meetings.
