Joana Lérias has a background in Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. in System’s Biology by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon which included 1 year and a half as a visiting Ph.D. student at Regensburg University (Regensburg, Germany). The PhD was focused on the development of new therapies for Cystic fibrosis, namely the study of ion channels that may overcome the channel function deficit associated with such a disease. After completion of the Ph.D., she moved to Prof. Markus Maeurer's laboratory at the Champalimaud Center for the Unknown, the ImmunoSurgery/ImmunoTherapy Laboratory, that is mainly focused on the use of the immune system as a tool for anti-cancer treatments. Indeed, in this laboratory, she gained vast experience in primary cell culture, immunohistology, flow cytometry, microdissections, fluorescence microscopy and several biomolecular techniques. During her career, she also developed strong interpersonal skills and good communication and writing skills, which include several oral and poster presentations, two awards, and eleven scientific publications (nine as the first author). As a PostDoctoral Researcher, she has supervised two students: one of a Laboratorial rotation from the NOVA Biomedical Research Master’s degree for 2 months (January-February 2020) and one Bachelor in Cell and Molecular Biology internship for 3 months (January-March 2020) as the main supervisor.

Other output
  1. Effect of polyclonal antibodies applied by artificial feeding to Rhipicephalus microplus ticks. Ticks are obligate haematophagous ectoparasites that can transmit a wide variety of pathogens being considered the principal vectors of disease among animals. The piroplasms Babesia bigemina and B. bovis are transmited mainly by Rhipicephalus microplus and R. annulatus ticks. Acaricides are still the most common method of tick control despite the disadvantages presented by them. Anti-tick vaccines. 2018.
