Marco Cavaco (H-index 14) has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from Lisbon School of Medicine and an MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Lisbon School of Pharmacy. His main interests have been the design and study of anticancer peptides, brain-penetrating peptides, and peptide conjugates (e.g., small molecule drugs, antibody fragments, proteins); as well as the development of more robust preclinical models (organ-on-chip, spheroids). He applies a wide range of research techniques, including chemistry (peptide synthesis, derivatization, and conjugation), biophysical techniques (spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, microscopy, flow cytometry), molecular and cellular biochemical techniques (cell culture – spheroids, blood-brain barrier (BBB) models , co-culture, viability assays, ELISA, PCR, Western Blot, cell organelle trafficking, immunofluorescence, and chromatography (HPLC). Marco has published more than 30 papers in international peer-reviewed journals; he has 2 patents and has presented his work (poster or orally) in 20 national/international meetings. The positive results from his work were the foundations for three national and one international successful applications where he is a team member. He is a co-Pi in another national successful application. Additionally, he has mentored national and international research students (8 PhD students, 3 MSc students, 2 ERASMUS students, and 2 medical students). He is also currently supervising 1 PhD student and 1 MSc student. He has enrolled in the organization of scientific events, participated in diverse outreach activities to promote science, and took part of scientific committees for the evaluation of master thesis and peer-review of submitted research papers.
