Isabel Calejo graduated with a degree in Bioengineering from the Catholic University of Porto in 2012. She began her research career at the Lab of Pharmacology and Neurobiology (ICBAS-UP) as a trainee, contributing to hands-on teaching for MSc students. In 2015, she completed her MSc in Forensic Sciences - Toxicology at FMUP, focusing on metabolomic profiling via GC-MS to differentiate urine samples from diseased (prostate cancer) and healthy individuals, leading to her first publication as a first author. In 2016, Isabel was awarded a PhD scholarship for the Tissue Engineering, Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Minho, 3B's Research Group. Her thesis, defended in May 2021, explored the engineering of tendon-to-bone interface through gradient scaffolds, culminating in 5 original articles, 2 reviews, and 2 book chapters. Concurrently, she enhanced her networking and leadership skills through an international mentoring program with the Director of Bioinformatics at BenevolentAI, England. Nonetheless, her work was recognized abroad by receiving a travel grant for attending an international conference. Before completing her PhD, Isabel started a postdoc at the University of Twente (Netherlands), focusing on microfluidic chips for real-time biomarker monitoring in collaboration with ERASMUS MC, resulting in a co-authored publication (10.1016/j.bios.2023.115510). Also, in 2021, she joined the i3S Bioengineered 3D Microenvironments Group (Porto) as a postdoctoral fellow, investigating endothelial plasticity to enhance therapeutic angiogenesis for ischemic cardiac tissues, where she developed her skills on microtissues fabrication and hydrogels synthesis. Later, in 2023, she joined the "Cello" project (FMUP, Porto), working on label-free methodologies for biomarkers detection. Isabel has excelled in competitive grant writing, securing over €20,000 in funding. Notable awards include a Kick-Starter grant for fabricating 3D biotextiles for skeletal muscle regeneration (2022) and the EORS Grant Tank competition for her "MuSculpt - Magnetic sculpting of vascularized skeletal muscle tissue" project (2023). As an expert reviewer for European Commission (H2020 Europe), Isabel provides critical evaluations for high-impact projects. Additionally, she has authored/co-authored >20 scientific communications, 16 articles ( 14 articles, 2 reviews and 2 book chapters). She also serves as a reviewer for top journals (Bioac. Mat., MDPI, ACS Biomaterials) and served as Guest Editor for Bioengineering (MDPI) and Co-Editor at Frontiers. Over the years, with a commitment to mentoring and supervision, Isabel has supervised MSc and PhD students and also participated in academic examinations, being the principal jury in two MSCs defenses: "Development of fibrous structures based on nanocellulose wetspun microfibers for tendon and ligament repair, healing an regeneration” and "Polymeric-based devices such as medical adhesives – from biomaterials to biological characterization tests". Overall, her expertise spans from biomaterials, microfabrication, cell biology, bioinformatics (Python, machine learning), to intellectual property management, underscored by advanced training in research project management and life sciences entrepreneurship.
