José Prates (1965-) holds the position of Full Professor (2010-) and Head of Department at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMV), University of Lisbon (Portugal). He leads the Quality of Animal Products Laboratory at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA), the research centre of FMV (2000-). In addition, José Prates is a member of the Associated Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS), a collaborative laboratory that unites the three Portuguese R&D centres specialising in Animal and Veterinary Sciences. He also is a Manager and a Strategic Board member of NZYTech, a biotechnology and food analysis company that he co-founded in 2008. José Prates's academic qualifications encompass a Graduation in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Lisbon, achieved in 1990 with a grade of 17 out of 20. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master's degree in Biochemistry in 1993, followed by a PhD in Animal Science and Technology in 2000. In 2007, he achieved the highest "academic degree" in Portugal (Agregação) in Animal Science and Technology, showcasing his extensive expertise and commitment to his field. With a publication record that includes over 20 books/book chapters and 250 papers (60% as the last author, and 40% as an international collaboration), José Prates' work is recognised in the scientific community (over 6000 citations, h-index 43, Scopus). He has led and contributed to over 40 international and national projects, mentored 25 Doctorate researchers, supervised 21 PhD theses, secured 4 patents and received 5 scientific awards. He integrated the Management Committee for COST Actions FA1401 (PiGutNet) and CA15215 (IPEMA), with broad international collaboration. Additionally, he co-founded NZYTech in 2008, actively serving as Manager and on its Strategic Board, bridging the gap between scientific research and industry innovation. José Prates's work is focused on advancing sustainable practices in livestock and food production, emphasizing novel feeding strategies to boost feeding efficiency and product quality. By incorporating microalgae, seaweeds and enzymes into diets for monogastric animals, his research aims not only at enhancing feed sustainability but also at improving meat quality and public health outcomes. This commitment aligns with One Health principles, promoting an integrative approach to ensure environmental sustainability, optimal animal health and positive impacts on human health.
