Currently Assistant Professor at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS), Universidade do Porto and researcher at i3S, Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (Biofabrication group). Graduated in Chemical Engineering, with a PhD in Biotechnology (Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa), in collaboration with University of Nevada, Reno, USA,, on expansion of hematopoietic stem cells. After a short period in a business environment, I joined the Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (INEB), Porto, where I broadened my knowledge on biomaterials, namely in surface modification at the molecular level. Later, I spent a received a prestigious Humboldt fellowship for Experiencied Researcher, spending a sabatic period in Ulm, Germany. In 2020, I co-found FETALDISC, an i3S spin-off company dedicated to fetal-based therapies for low back pain. My scientific interests focus on bioengineering in health, in particular regenerative engineering. In the last years, I have focused on the development of immunomodulatory therapies based on stem cells and biomaterials for intervertebral disc. The generated knowledge has been translated to other osteoarticular tissues and to immunotherapy-based therapies for cancer.
