Mark Stephen Gibson studied for his BSc degree in Biochemistry at the University of Surrey from 1999-2003. He developed his long standing interest in Immunogenetics at the Anthony Nolan Trust from 2003-2006 before undertaking his Master of Science degree in Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Surrey. He then completed his PhD in Infection and Immunity at The Pirbright Institute and University College London from 2007-2011. During this time, he cloned & characterised novel members of the chicken Interleukin-1 family. Next, Mark took on a Postdoc position within the Immunogenetics Group at the Pirbright Institute where he characterised Natural Killer cell receptor diversity and function in cattle. After moving to Portugal, he undertook a Postdoc position at the Chronic Diseases Research Centre (CEDOC) in Lisbon, focussed on understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate sterile inflammation in atherosclerosis. Mark is now a Senior Postdoc in the RNA Systems Biology group within the Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI), Universidade de Lisboa. His project aims to characterise the role of microRNAs in T-cell function and anti-HIV defence. Mark is also a junior lecturer at Faculdade de Ciencias, Universidade de Lisboa. To date, he has published ten peer-reviewed articles in journals.

2017/03/01 - 2017/11/24 Career Opportunities for PostDoctoral Researchers in Life Sciences brought together postdoctoral researchers from across Portugal. The inaugural event hosted a Job Fair, that aimed to promote new career prospects and opportunities for PhD holders. Individuals from key industries and companies showcased their mission and values, and provided PhD holders the opportunity to apply for jobs. Additionally, several workshops presented alternative career options that exist away from the lab. A Scientific Symposium for post-docs preceded the Job Fair. (2017/11/22 - 2017/11/24)
