Vasco C. Romão, MD PhD, is Invited Assistant Professor of Rheumatology at University of Lisbon Medical School (FMUL), an academic rheumatologist at Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (CHULN), and a post-doctoral researcher at Instituto de Medicina Molecular. He got his Integrated MSc in Medicine in 2009 at FMUL, obtained two postgraduate Clinical Scholars Research Training Certificate Programs of the Harvard Medica School-Portugal Partnership (2013 & 2014), completed the Rheumatology Internship at CHULN (2018) and in 2020 he obtained his PhD degree in Medicine-Rheumatology at University of Lisbon Medical School. His main clinical and research focus is the pathophysiology and management of Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He has been deeply involved in the study of synovial pathobiology in RA, having participated in the ground-breaking R4RA study recently published in The Lancet and in the EULAR recommendations for synovial tissue research. He set up the SS Multidisciplinary Clinic in 2015, where more than 600 patients have been assessed to date, and he is the PI of the SS Biobank-IMM collection and of the CHULN-based OLISSYPO SS cohort (~300 patients). He is currently the co-chair of the Portuguese Systemic Rheumatic Diseases Study Group (GEDRESIS) and co-chair of the SS WG in the European Reference Network ReCONNET. He was part of the task force elaborating the EULAR recommendations for the treatment of SS as well as of the SS Big Data Consortium, with over 10,000 patients. He co-supervises 2 PhD students (since 2020) and supervised 6 MSc students (since 2015). He is the clinical supervisor of a rheumatology fellow (since Jan 2020).
