Carmen de Sena Tomás obtained her degree in Biology from the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain in 2006. Then, she moved to the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CNB-CSIC) in Madrid where she performed her PhD sutdies under the supervision of Prof. Dr. José Pérez-Martín. During her PhD, she demonstrated how in absence of DNA damage, the DNA damage response pathway (Atr1/Chk1) controls cell cycle progression in dikaryons, an essential cellular stage in the life cycle of most Basidiomycetes. In addition she characterized the role of Ku proteins which play and essential role in the telomeres to avoid unwanted recombination in U. maydis. After earning her PhD degree in 2012, she performed a first postdoc on genome stability in Prof. Dr. William K. Holloman's lab at Cornell University (New York, USA), where she showed the role of a LAMMER kinase in cell cycle regulation and chromosome segregation during meiosis in U. maydis. Subsequently, she joined Dr. Kimara Targoff’s lab at Columbia University (New York, USA) to study heart development and regeneration in zebrafish. During this second postdoc, she demonstrated a previously unrecognized Nkx2.5-dependent regenerative circuit that invokes myocardial proliferation and dedifferentiation to ensure effective regeneration in the zebrafish heart. Currently, she works as a senior postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Leonor Saúde's lab at Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM-JLA) in Lisboa, studying the role of the immune system in spinal cord regeneration in zebrafish. She has participated in international collaborations and published several research articles in international peer-reviewed Q1 journals and attended international epecialized conferences where her work has been recognized.
